Unfortunately, there was no mention of the new creatures to be found in any of the case files or notes with recent dates. There was a whole hell of a lot on the roaches, though. Henry had been so focused on helping Noah to recover and then reeling from the damn mental connection from their encounter with the things, that he hadn't thought to see if the people here had faced them.

According to information he'd gathered, the sheriff had concluded that the roaches came into Spencer en mass as a result of the Deluge. One minute the YMCA was there, the next minute, scores of the bugs were there instead. The town was besieged with them from that day on. In fact, between the Deluge and the bugs Spencer's population had been halved before Fate's Handmaiden had arrived. They must have found some way to kill the suckers or at least repel them because Henry hadn't seen near the numbers the sheriff had described since he'd been in town.

The description of what the roaches did to someone or something they attacked was good and gruesome. Henry's thought what Noah'd endured was bad, but the results of an uninterrupted attack were horrendous. The worst thing about it was that the poor son's of bitches that the bugs got didn't die right away, or maybe it was just their bodies that didn't stop moving. The sheriff hadn't figured that out yet.

Henry packed up everything he'd found on the damned roaches to have Xander take a look at, checked his pocket watch, pretended he didn't think of Shawn and stepped over to the gun locker. The locke was already busted open from his last visit. Henry hadn't taken much from there previously- he'd had more than enough for to protect just he and Noah. Now that there were three others and the possibility of taking a road trip to Haven for medical supplies, Henry wanted the lot at the house. He pulled a couple of rifles out of the locker and carried them outside to the Humvee.

Jason tracked Henry's scent from the house all the way to the sheriff's station. He had just had to get out of the house and away from that new guy, Brian. He didn't know why the man had bothered him so much. It's not like he had a prior claim on Noah or anything. But Brian's cockiness seemed so much more agressive than was called for. It wasn't like Jason's own style of flirting. When he flirted, people knew he was just playing. When Brian flirted, it felt more like he was marking territory. Stop it, he told himself, Noah's a grown man. If he wants to make out with the last gay man alive on the earth, he's entitled. Even if that man seems to be an asshole.

He spotted Henry across the street in front of the station loading rifles into his Humvee. "Hey," he called, "Henry, need a hand?"

Henry looked up to see Jason coming across the street towards him. "Henry, need a hand?" Jason offered.

Henry still wasn't sure he trusted the guy, but Xander thought he was fine and Noah seemed to think he was pretty good, too. Henry tried not to linger on thoughts of Jason with Noah- Henry wasn't sure if Noah had been yanking his chain earlier about them having sex, but he could see the sparks between them, so even if it didn't happen this morning, it was probably going to happen soon- Henry stopped himself from following that line of thought any further. Not thinking of a monkey had always been hard for Henry.

"Much appreciated," Henry answered as he pulled open the rear of the vehicle and stowed the weapons inside. Then, he lead the way into the Sheriff's Station.

Jason followed Henry into the station and to the weapons storage locker. "So what's with the stockpile?" he asked. "Looked like you were pretty well set for guns at the house." He could tell Henry wasn't quite comfortable with him yet, whether because of his abrupt entrance the night before or his flirting with Noah that morning he wasn't sure. But Henry seemed to be more of a decision maker than Noah. So if Jason was to stay with the group and/or convince them to go to Haven, Henry was the guy to convince.

Henry gave guns to Jason, piling them onto his arms like firewood as he answered, "One, we were set with enough to defend two people in one house, but now we're five people and likely going to be two houses soon enough, two, your little friend from last night was new- we haven't seen anything like it before, but like as not, it wasn't alone, and three, three new people have dropped into my town in the last twenty-four I don't want these out here for someone less friendly to get a hold of if that trend continues." Henry picked up two cases of ammunition and walked out toward the Humvee, not bothering to make sure Jason was following.

"Why two houses?" asked Jason, "Seems like we ought to stick together if whatever's out there comes back." He shifted the load of guns to one arm and picked up a third case of ammunition before following Henry out to the vehicle. "And another thing," Jason continued, "your town? Is this where you grew up or something? Cause I gotta say, you don't sound particularly like a midwesterner." He wasn't sure he understood Henry's attachment to this place. Unless he was committed to a life of solitude or celebacy, it would make more sense for him to travel to where other people were.

[Henry] Yes, it is my town. spencertheelder October 23 2006, 04:18:20 UTC

"Why two houses? Maybe because the one we're in has only three beds, and even if you and Noah end up sharing, that leave one odd man out, plus I'm not giving up the big bedroom for the two of you." Henry said, stacking the ammunition in the back of the Humvee. "No, I didn't grow up here. Santa Barbara, where I grew up, is underwater, but I've been in this town for weeks, been here longer than anyone, and I've done the work to cull the necessities from all around town so that there could be clothes on your back and food in your belly. It's my town and if you don't like it, you can kiss Noah goodbye and head out." Henry said and want back inside the building again. He didn't like the idea of this kid questioning him. Who the hell was he to do that?

He opened another locker and spotted some tasers. He decided to pick them up as well- Maybe Brian would be willing to use one. Henry would al least one offer him.

"Whoa, Henry, hang on," Jason backpedaled. Seems that Henry was a bit more high strung than he'd originally thought. "Listen, I didn't mean to offend." he said, jogging a bit to keep up with the older man's strides, "I was just trying to understand why you didn't seem all gung ho to go find the other survivors." Henry just kept pulling weapons out of the locker, intent on his task.

"Listen," Jason tried again, "where I come from, there's always been safety in numbers. If you were alone, you were anyone's meat and I don't mean that in a good way. Being alone makes you weak and I've been alone for way too long. If you guys hadn't have been there for me last night, I'm not sure what would have happened." He stopped, watched as Henry loaded up on tasers and other equipment. Human or not, Henry was an alpha, the type of guy used to being in charge. Jason automatically fell back on his training and adopted a submissive tone of voice. "Look, I'm grateful for the food and the clothes and the first aid and all. If there was a way I could pay you back I would. But I came to this place with little more than the clothes on my back and now even those are ruined. All I want is to find a way..." he stopped suddenly; he hadn't told anyone about his theory that he was in the wrong universe altogether, and something told him Henry wouldn't believe his story. "All I want is to not be alone," he amended, "just for a little longer. I'm not asking for a room or even a bed. Hell, I'll crash on the floor in the basement if you like. Just, please, give me a chance to prove myself before you decide to cut me loose." He hugged his arms across his chest and hoped he didn't sound too pathetic.

Henry frowned at Jason for a few seconds considering. Okay, maybe he'd been a little harsh on the kid. The new information about the damned roaches was eating at Henry. He felt like the little bit of safety and sanity he'd been building here was unraveling and the man in front of him seemed like a part of that.

Also, Jason was right, there was safety in numbers. "Don't be stupid," Henry answered, "Noah'd never let me hear the end of it if I tried to kick you out. Here, carry this," Henry thrust another box of ammunition at Jason and stepped back over to the sheriff's desk to collect the file for Xander. Checking his watch again (not thinking of Shawn), he ordered, "Let's get a move on," and went to the Humvee to get back to Noah.

[Jonas and Kayla] Mas Gente, Si! fikgirl October 24 2006, 03:51:16 UTC
The sign said Spencer, Illinois and it seemed like as good a place as any to stop. After more than a week stationary in Indiana, Jonas had decided it was time for them to get on the road again. Kayla had been resistant at first - (And with good reason,) Jonas thought - but they couldn't hide out forever. If for no other reason than the house they stayed in had limited supplies, no electricity and not even a generator.

Jonas supposed that he and Kayla could have found a store somewhere and purchased a generator, but truthfully, he wanted to be moving. While Kayla felt safe hiding - and locking all the doors and windows at night - Jonas thought they'd be better off on the road. He didn't think that Gus was still alive; in fact, he was pretty certain that Gus had died a painful, miserable death right where Jonas left him.

He tried to feel bad about that; Jonas Ray had never been a violent man. A business man who took risks yes, and sometimes a cut throat entrepreneur, but never a violent man. Faced with Gus and Timothy and the dark side of humanity, he'd stumbled across his own darkness. That he felt bad about - that he could find a dark part of himself and not feel guilty in the aftermath. The only thing he felt badly for were Kayla's nightmares.

Getting back on the road had been good for them, though. Jonas could see it in Kayla's face and her mannerisms. Not hiding meant she had to reclaim that independence that made her Kayla, and it gave him hope that his friend would recover eventually. Even Aunt Millie was happy to be back in motion. (Although the dumb dog seemed just as happy to chase grasshoppers back at the farmhouse too.)

"We'll canvas first," Jonas suggested as he shifted in the passenger seat. The gunshot wound to his shoulder was still sore, tender and healing. He did as much of the driving as he could, but mostly he'd had to turn over the reins to Kayla. "Drive around town, see if any of the stores look like they haven't been looted, locate a gasoline station -"

"I know what canvas means, Jonas," Kayla rolled her eyes and gave him a half-grin. It didn't quite touch her eyes and wasn't up to her usual caliber, but it was close. "You just do what you do best over there."

"I thought I was doing what I did best, super -"

The suddenness at which Kayla braked to a halt threw Jonas forward. He braced himself on the dashboard using his bad arm, which earned a hiss of discomfort. "Kayla what the -"

"People. Men. Dead ahead." Kayla's voice was tight, her grip on the steering wheel making her knuckles pale.

Jonas followed her gaze, tracking the sight of two men about thirty feet down the street, loading equipment into a Hummer of their own.

"Maria, madre de Dios," Jonas muttered. Two more people in an almost empty world - and he didn't know whether to be happy or worried.

Henry looked up at the sound of screeching tires, to see another Humvee maybe ten yards away. Apparently, his town was becoming grand central. "Let me deal with this," he told Jason, with the full expectation that the man would wait there for Henry. He didn't bring one of the rifles that they had been packing up because the driver of the car was a woman and, stereotyping or not, Henry didn't expect trouble from a woman. He still had a handgun tucked in the back of his waistband for if he was wrong. He walked up to the vehicle's driver side, but stopped a few feet short so as to not seem threatening.

He gave a little wave and an attempt at smiling.

As they spotted the Humvee, one of the men broke away and headed in their direction. Kayla's shoulders noticeably tightened and the grip that Jonas thought couldn't get any tighter on the steering wheel, actually did. She started to tremble slightly, her respirations increasing and in answer, Aunt Millie whined faintly.

"Kayla," Jonas laid a hand on her arm. He had to shift in his seat to do it - his good arm was his right arm - his eyes quickly tracking the progress the one man made. The glock was on the seat between them and he slowly lowered his hand to it. "Relax."

"I am relaxed," Kayla said, her voice tight in a way that was anything but evident of relaxation.

As he drew nearer, Jonas could see that the man was older, perhaps early to late fifties. He didn't approach in a threatening manner, but recent experience told Jonas that that meant nothing. Still, if Kayla lost it now and the man was hostile, they'd be in a world of hurt.

Biting back the pain of motion - that had been discomfort up until he collided with the dashboard - Jonas lifted his left arm and wrapped his hand around Kayla's. He spoke very softly, "Let go. Sit back and let go. We're in the vehicle. He's outside. You can always gun it in reverse."

Whether it was the words, the tone or simply Kayla's realization that what he said was true, she did as he instructed and by the time the man stopped about ten feet from the driver's side door, Kayla at least appeared to be more collected.

The man gave a smile and a wave that Jonas assumed were supposed to be friendly and non-threatening.

Jonas slid closer to Kayla so that he could actually speak to the man - and size him up a bit more closely. "Hey there. You're the first people we've seen in a while. I'm Jonas -" Kayla made an odd noise in the back of her throat and Jonas ignored the widening of her eyes, "-And this is Kayla."

No, they couldn't trust everyone they met, they'd learned that lesson the hard way. They also couldn't distrust everyone. It was a very fine line and Jonas would walk it carefully.

As the man introduced them, it was pretty clear that the woman was on the edge of panic. She was covering, but not all that well. It didn't seem as though her issue was with the man, though, so Henry discarded the possibility that he was going to have to intervene in some way. No, it was Henry himself she seemed to be worried about and that made some sense. Henry imagined that a woman who looked like that would be something of a target if they encountered the wrong type of people.

Henry widened his smile and introduced himself using the quiet, open voice he used to use with the most shaken of victims. "Nice to meet you. Henry Spencer. That man back there is my friend Jason. You folks need any help?"

Henry spoke with the quiet, patient voice of a doctor . . . or a cop. He kept his distance, and slowly, Kayla turned her head to look at him. She dealt with enough cops when working in the ER that she couldn't help but get that feeling from him. That didn't mean he was safe, and Kayla didn't plan on turning off the engine or taking her foot off the brake yet. Still she eased back to let Jonas talk to him.

"Henry Spencer of Spencer, Illinois," Jonas smiled, "What a coincidence, eh?"

Aunt Millie shoved past him, trying to wedge herself between Jonas and Kayla and shove her face out of the window. Her stubby tail wagged excitedly, even as Jonas did his best to shove her back out of the way. "Come on, Aunt Millie. Let me talk to the man. You can talk later."

Kayla smiled a bit, scratching the dog behind the ears. Dogs were supposed to be good judges of people, right? (Or maybe she just wants the fresh air.)

"We're actually," Jonas shoved the dog again, "Taking a tour, seeing the US. But we were hoping to resupply ourselves. Gasoline, food, water, that sort of thing." He apparently gave up on dislodging the dog as he scooted back and made room for her to scurry into Kayla's lap.

"Have you seen any other people?" Kayla asked suddenly. Aunt Millie calmed her, as did Jonas's calm facade. She wasn't about to jump out and shake Henry's hand - or his friend Jason's - but at least she moved the car into park.

But that was mostly because it was hard to navigate with a dog in her lap.

The woman- Kayla was looking at him suspiciously- not as worried as she had seemed a moment before, more curious, which Henry counted as an improvement. He was even sort of pleased to see the dog. They could be useful.

"Amazingly enough, I'm from a couple thousand miles away- California. But, I was traveling- like yourselves, and I guess I couldn't resist having a town with my name on it, so I stayed. Been here several weeks now. We have enough to share of just about anything you might need back at the house, except medicines. You're welcome to anything you need.

"As to other people- with you I know of seventeen. There's five of us- seven now here in Spencer. Seven more a few hours south in a town called Haven- we've talked on the radio to them, and three more in South Carolina, supposedly headed this way in a few days."

Jonas smiled, noticing that Kayla perked up the moment that Henry mentioned the word "medicines." There was a subtle shift in her persona, from confused survivor to confident professional, a shift that he'd learned to recognize over their time traveling together.

(From survivor to doctor in sixty seconds,) Jonas mused, although truthfully he was glad to see a bit of Dr. Thornton peek through. It meant Kayla was at least relaxing enough to trust and follow his lead.

He let out a low whistle when Henry told them how many people he knew of. "Diez y siete! Dios mio. No lo creo," Jonas shook his head in disbelief. How many weeks of travel, only to encounter Gus and Timothy and now to find out that there were more people just beyond the ridge. He had questions: about the radio, about the town to the south but Kayla spoke up before he could switch back to English and get a word out.

"Medicines? You need medicine? I have some," Dr. Thornton pronounced. "Is someone hurt or injured? I'm a doctor."
