So, Wonderland royalty. I was re-watching parts of Alice last night, and came across the last scene between the Queen and King of Hearts - you know the one, where the Queen is all, "Zomg we gotta go" and the King is all "uh yeah no, not so much." And it got me thinking about how succession and government and all that kind of stuff works in ( Read more... )

Just for watching Alice, I kinda assumed (and I know where that gets me, but meh) that Wonderland is ruled by women traditionally, but that the Queen wasn't originally royalty. I got more of the impression that the King was originally the Crown Prince, and whoever he married would become the next Queen and ruler (just like in old fairy tales, where the princess marries and whoever it is, peasant or prince, becomes the next king). And now Jack is the Prince, with Duchess being groomed as the next Queen.

If the Queen of Hearts seized her power over the surrounding countries, as I believe she did, then perhaps the idea of her having taken the citizens of the other queendoms as slaves has merit. I can see her beheading the opposing rulers and claiming their land as her own. And really, her suits were ready to stab her in the back at the first sign of freedom, which leads me to believe that their loyalty hasn't always been to her. I imagine that the White Knights are connected with the White King/Queen (think Arthur and the Round Table, perhaps), and would have been the leaders of a resistance. Such an opposing force would have meant war, so the Queen of Hearts would have attacked them first, to take the other countries' best chance out of the picture. Then it would have been easier to force the others to bend to her will, with their best leader gone.

That's just my rather convoluted take on the matter, anyway. XD
