Humans. So short lived it’s amazing they achieve anything in their lifetimes.

Compared to him Sarah Jane is still an infant of course, but all those years waiting and thinking about the life she led with an outcast Time Lord made her wiser than most of her kind. That becomes obvious when she decides to walk away, not looking back.

His life is so bright for them, whispering of adventure and fun, mesmerizing and an offer they cannot refuse. But no matter how much they love him, how much he loves them, no matter how hard he tries, he knows they’ll get singed in the end.

Like a moth to a flame they follow him, not questioning anything until it’s too late. They see the danger of his life, get burned by its pain and yet an awful lot chooses to stay, to take the risks and ignore the warnings. Some say that it's worth it, but he isn't too sure about that.

A small shiver travels down his spine, so many ghosts haunting his consciousness.

Rose is watching him warily, obviously annoyed he let Mickey join because she still doesn’t see the darkness that he travels in is the only reason he seems to glow like a guiding star.

He isn’t safe and Mickey will make sure she doesn’t forget.

'Dumping' companions. He sighs.

She doesn’t even know about the others; those who died still so sorry, it wasn’t in vain. Or was it?, those who chose to leave is she still travelling, too? or those who found a life of their own do they tell bedtime stories about a strange blue box?

How many of those were waiting for him? Did they ever understand it was better that way?

Death can wait while time moves on. Age is something he can’t fight, not even with a time machine.
One day they would’ve cursed the moment they decided to follow him, mourning a life they never had because a lonely alien whisked them away, made them stray from everything they had and knew as 'normal'.

One way or the other, life has to go on and so does he. The pain is tearing him apart already, running the only option left.

Silent goodbyes are better than angrily shouted accusations or long hours of holding hands in hospitals when death comes knocking.

He has vowed to protect them, from danger, from death, even from himself. Especially Rose, innocent Rose who hasn’t understood his life yet.
He won’t cling to her in selfishness. He’ll be alone in the end either way, so he’ll protect her life in all the ways he can.

He sent her home once and he’ll do it again. And she’ll have a fantastic life. Without him.

He loves her.

That’s why he’ll let her go one day.
