Hayley had to check on her fake-robo-child-thing, which was exactly why she stopped by Liir's room.

She knocked on the door.

"Honey! I'm hoooooome."

"Back from the wars already?" he asked, not looking up from the collection of pointed wooden sticks and yarn.

Makejoy, on the other hand, was curled up around the little droid, carefully watching the 'baby'.

"Hello, Hayley."

Hayley tilted her head at Makejoy.

"Wow, it's like the dog's protectin' her!"

He put the bundle of needles down and glanced over at the dog.

"Well, in the reading I did about her breed, they're supposed to be very good with children. There was even something in there about them acting as babysitters."

...of course that had been in reference to something fictional, but he hadn't really known.

"I could see it."

"...so it's a magic dog?" Hayley said. "Like from where you come from?"

This idea seemed absolutely wonderful to her.

Blink.

"Well, she's actually from around here, but I've never exactly been good about knowing when magic was about. Mostly, though, she's just very smart."

He glanced at the bed, where to be honest, he couldn't see really much more to do than what Makejoy was doing.

"It seems to be working. Unless you'd like to take the thing."

"Oh, I don't think I can," Hayley said. "I've got that Fight Club tonight, you know?"

He winced.

"I've been to. Not exactly my sort of thing, though I tried. And that's fine. No need to trouble yourself."

"Oh, well, I can take her after, you know," Hayley said. "Mommy just has to go learn to fight off the bad guys."

She enjoyed this all a little too much.

Liir didn't raise an eyebrow. He felt it would be a waste of time.

"Sounds prudent," was all he said to that.

"Great!" Hayley said.

"...you know, we never did name our precious little angel."

He glanced at the droid.

"Melena?" he offered, thinking that she'd liked it in class.

"Melena," Hayley said. "Our darling little Mel. I like it."

Liir thought it was particularly amusing considering that the only context in which he'd heard the name had to do with Nanny's grousing about Elphaba's mother. But it was a pretty name, all the same.

"I do as well, actually. And Makejoy seems pleased, so that's really everyone covered."

"Perfect!" Hayley said, bouncing on her toes. "She's got great parents. We're gonna ace this just fine."

Liir wasn't quite sure about that but he was content with things.

"I think our assignment is being cared for exactly as it should be," was how he agreed with her.

"And if you'd like some tea and cookies, I'll have them for you when you're back from the club."
