Geez, it seems to be a whole slew of fanfiction flowing all over the place.

So let me add more to it ^^;

Cont from This last post that I left on a cliff hanger, it's the FF7 one that I'm working on. I'm taking a break from the FF8 one for a while.

=====================================================

Cloud ignored the loud scream of the wheels as they impacted on the rocky surface. He had been in mid air briefly as he hurried through the steep mountain path to get past the Nibel Mountains.

His side stop in Nibelheim had lasted longer than what he planned and he felt that he was running behind schedule. It wasn't for a delivery or anything since his last one was taken care of in Cosmo Canyon. His next destination was to meet up with everyone at Cid's place in Rocket Town to catch a ride to where they are all planning to go for tonight and the next day, outside the ruins of Midgar.

Parts of Midgar had been rebuilt outside what used to be sectors two through four using its own scrap metal. The locals dubbed the rebuilt area, 'Edge,' though the official name is still Midgar.

Midgar had been ground zero of the Meteor impact a few years back and it displaced so many people, and killed even more. This is the actual reason why Cloud is hurrying to meet up with everyone; Tomorrow is the third anniversary of the impact and it was to remember those people who were lost that day. It had become a new holiday called, 'Remembrance Day.'

To Cloud, and to everyone that he knew, that day meant so much more than just mourning the loss of people. It was to honor all those who helped them out in their fight to prevent Meteor from doing any more damage than what it had done already, to make each and everyday after that impact even possible. This is to also celebrate their lost friends who gave their lives and helped to save the planet from total destruction.

The distant sound of an echoing pop caught his attention as he looked to the west. After hearing two more in rapid succession, he concluded that it is gunfire. Cloud couldn't hold back an obvious sigh of aggravation and annoyance, he knew what was going on over there.

For some odd reason, he blamed Shin-ra for this happening on an epidemic level. Ever since Shin-ra lost power, the multi-national mega-corporation had to let go all but a few select employees to prevent the company from losing everything as it faded from the public eye.

In hindsight, perhaps attacking Shin-ra directly with participating in blowing up those makou reactors seemed to be the cause of putting the world in the 'sorry state it's in,' as Rufus said recently. Shin-ra had been so integrated with the global economy with providing services and products, governing cities and employing millions of people, and to suddenly close their doors left a huge void that put everything into a global depression.

Now these jobless people who have no money, no place to go, and many still have families to feed, have to resort to becoming Highwaymen. Gangs who roam the roads looking for travelers and rob them for everything that they have.

Ironically, that is why he is able to stay in business delivering packages. Not many people can traverse the country side and not have much to worry about. It is also why he always travels armed. Some of the items he transports vary from rare family heirlooms to even vital organs for transplants where time is the essence. He has the skill and know how to get things done. The funny thing is that it pays more than going on mercenary jobs and it leaves him with a clear conscious.

There was no choice to it, and he changed direction to intercept the Highwaymen and to see if he can lend any kind of assistance.

=====================================================

The lone defender is a girl of far western descent in her late teens, and to the robber's dismay, highly trained in martial arts with a specialty of an exotic weapon called the Shuriken.

Yuffie had already said a few 'choice' words to them and it did exactly what she had planned; upset them to the point that they weren't thinking clearly on their attacks to try to rob her and to demoralize them.

Out of the seven who showed up out of nowhere, 3 were knocked out cold already and 2 ran away. This left her with 2 others, one she was currently in hand to hand combat with and the other recovering from being dazed and was slowly getting up.

The guy that she is currently in hand to hand combat with appeared to have some kind of SOLDIER training. He was doing a good job in keeping her occupied, and she was running out of insults.

The second guy managed to stumble upon his feet and pulled out a small handgun from an ankle holster to start his retaliation. Taking a moment to think clearly, he remembered that he had limited ammo so he needed to make every shot count and started to concentrate on aiming towards the general area of her torso.

"Hey!"

This startled the gunman and before he could react, saw a bright flash of light and was knocked flat on his back. He is totally knocked out and is no longer a threat.

Cloud flipped his sword since he deliberately hit him with the reverse side of it, meaning that there will be no lethal damage. Perhaps a broken jaw, or concussion, if he was lucky.

Already from identifying her over sized weapon from a distance, he knew it was Yuffie fighting off a random attack, and figured to only wait on standby unless things got out of hand. He knew from past experience that he interfered more than what he already did, then he would have to face her wrath claiming that she doesn't need any help just because she's just a girl. This is her fight unless she calls for help, which will be unlikely knowing her.

The last attacking highwayman looked at Cloud to quickly assess him. He is more of a threat than the girl his is fighting but was wondering why the new arrival isn't attacking.

Yuffie noticed Cloud but wanted to finish this guy off before talking to him.

"Hey, quit paying attention to the pretty boy here and look at me when I'm hitting you!" She obviously questioned her opponent's sexuality. She knew that most military types get easily offended when you imply that.

Her opponent glared at her briefly as she hit him dead on with a specialty skill known as a limit break. The blast that she generated knocked him back and now is lying face down into the ground.

There was a short pause before Yuffie started to look over the attackers. It was her turn to grab everything of value from them to claim as her own.

"'Pretty boy'?" Cloud crossed his arms. He really had no idea what to think about that comment and started to brush it off as her insulting them, not him.

Yuffie shrugged, "Eh, whatever works." She lifted the wallet of her last opponent and took all the gil currency out of it before tossing it to the side. After a moment of intensive searching, she waved her arms in frustration and pushed him away. "Gwad, what good are you? Not a single piece of materia on any of them."

Yuffie stood up and started to brush herself off. She had to settle for the gil they had on them as a prize for winning this fight. Then she reached over and grabbed her bag that she was carrying on her before the attack.

Cloud motioned for Yuffie to come with him. "C'on, we're going to be late."

She nodded, "Right." Then climbed on his bike since he offered her a ride.

=====================================================

Yuffie had to hold on to him tighter as the speed accelerated and the bike had a tendency of going airborne briefly when it hit a high enough slope. She also had to duck her face behind him to use him as a windbreak so it would limit the amount of dirt getting into her eyes.

Cloud had been traveling off-road since he found some routes to be faster and he didn't have to worry about any other parties of highwaymen who keep a constant watch over well-traveled roads.

The loud chirping sound of a phone caused Yuffie to reach for her right pocket but noticed that there was no vibration to it. It wasn't her phone going off and Cloud reduced speed to reach for his phone on his left and flip it open.

"Yeah." He started listening.

Yuffie shook off the urge to comment that they were using the same ring tone as she kept quiet to try to figure out who was on the other line and what it was all about.

"Is this Cloud?" An unknown male voice asked.

"Yeah, who's this?"

"I have a job for you. One that requires your specialized skills."

"We're closed for the holiday, call back later." Cloud got the distinct impression that it would not be a good idea to not associate with this person right away. He had no real indication, but it was a deep down gut feeling. He was about to hang up.

"Twenty-thousand."

Cloud paused to hear more.

"That is what we are offering for this job."

Cloud slowed his bike to a stop. "I'm listening."

It is now obvious to Yuffie that he is talking business and remained quiet. However after a few moments of studying his facial expressions and then looking at her up and down in a odd way and then listening even more intently, she suddenly wanted to know what was going on.

Cloud finally said, "I'll think about it and gather some intelligence." It was an easy way to stall for time.

"You have 48 hours to decide." The other voice said.

Cloud hung up and again looked at Yuffie again in a odd way and kept on pondering the logic of the caller's request.

Yuffie stared wide eyed back at him and shrugged, "What?"

Cloud didn't say anything right away and revved the engine loudly before it lurched forward in a sudden acceleration.

"What!" Yuffie yelled. She knew that it had something to do with her and she demanded to know.

Cloud turned his head to the side and started asking her some questions.

"Know anyone named Metzger?"

"He's a bastard. Why do you want to know?" Just by thinking of this guy seemed to start making her feel angry. She really hated this guy.

"What do you know about him?"

Yuffie shrugged, "We found oil in Wutai and he wants it. He's been doing a lot of shady things to get as many as he can. I think Barret had to deal with him and his thugs a couple of times." Then she paused to again ask her first question. "...Why?"

Cloud shrugged, "... He wants to hire me for a job."

"What!" She exclaimed. "You better have said 'no'."

"I said 'I'll think about it.' I didn't give him an answer."

Yuffie shook her head. "Man, I can't believe you!"

Cloud shook his head as he thought more about this request and blurted out his next question, "Is he stupid or something?"

Yuffie blinked in surprise over that sudden question and started to laugh so hard that her sides started to hurt and she almost lost her balance and had to hold on to Cloud tighter to keep from falling off. Then took a moment to calm down. "I think so. Was that your first impression of this guy?"

Cloud let out a smirk, "I guess I should let you in on the joke."

She nodded, "Yeah? That would help."

"He wants to put some pressure on Godo and wants someone to kidnap the Princess of Wutai to force his hand and negotiate for the oil fields."

Yuffie understood right away, "You're right. He's stupid. No, I'll take that back; he's a fucking retard. Didn't he know that I'm right here?" She didn't lead a 'royal' lifestyle since she was ten when she choose the life of an adventurer and trained as a Ninja.

Cloud shook his head, "Apparently not."

Yuffie shook her head, "Geez..."

"Now you see why I'm stalling? If I said no, he would have found someone else."

"So what are we going to do?"

Cloud shrugged, "I dunno. Call your dad and ask."

"Fine. But tell me more. How much did he offer?" She needed to at least tell him as much as possible.

"Twenty."

"Thousand?"

Cloud nodded.

Yuffie took a moment to ponder that and let out a huff, "Is that all I'm worth? Man, that's a low blow."

Cloud shrugged, "If it will make you feel better, I can try to get fifty, but I don't think that's going to work since you can be a real pain in the as-"

Yuffie slammed her fist into his lower back to shut him up. She knew exactly where the nearest pressure point was on him and she hit as hard as she could.

"Ow!" Cloud turned to her, "You can walk, ya know?" That hit was sudden and unexpected and really hit a tender spot.

Yuffie had a very aggravated look on her face.

"Look, I'm just trying to bail you out. This whole thing can get pretty bad." Cloud gave her a genuine look of concern for her well being.

The angry look faded from face and changed to a confused and lost look. She honestly didn't know what to do and changed the tone of her voice to a somber one. "Then I'll call my dad. Let's hope that he has any ideas." She pulled out a small device out of her pocket and Cloud again reduced the speed so she can talk without too much wind.

Yay for lunch breaks. BTW, an idea the finally give this story a title is floating across my head. I personally like "Distortion" but I've been watching Serial Experiments Lain lately so that is where the thought came from. I haven offically descided yet.

[EDIT] I noticed that this post is actually 'Friends' Only so I fixed it and added an additional scene....

New title idea since it is dealing with the past and memories - Reminiscence (though not offical yet)

final fantasy 7, work in progress, fan fiction, rough draft, final fantasy vii, ff7
