The Shin-Ra Company’s Reconstruction

Jul 01, 2006 17:13

Good day all, I decided to make another deep Rufus Shinra entry regarding the reconstruction of the Shin-Ra Company. Don’t worry, this entry is not based on his heath issues, we already got that off our chests, lol. It’s kind of long, but I do hope you give it a read for me. I spent the past few hours typing it up, and I’m quite proud of it. You’ll witness my wild imagination in this entry, and I know most of you know of the details I tend to go in. :P

With all that said enjoy the entry…and have a good weekend everybody!!!

*Quick notice: The following entry is based on opinion and imagination. Despite my views, everybody else is still entitled to their own views. Thanks, and enjoy.*

After research on the internet, I noticed that quite a few websites state things I disagree on. The first thing is the idea of Rufus Shinra reconstructing Midgar. It seems to me that many people confuse Rufus’ goals in Advent Children. His main goal is to rebuild the world, and use the Shin-Ra Company to help in the process, along with supplying the planet with an energy source that will not harm the planet. This plan doesn’t evolve reconstructing Midgar, seeing as how 500 years later, it’s still in ruins. That city is pretty much beyond repair. In fact, it’s quite possible Rufus left it standing to remind the world how foolish they all were, symbolism if you will.

However, what he did do was rebuild a brand new city known as Edge. I use to think that the people built the city on their own will, but it just didn’t add up. The people of Midgar wasn’t all that wealthy to begin with, so I can’t imagine them managing and building their own city. This is why I consider Rufus to be the creator, and owner of the city of Edge. This will explain why he had the right to build a monument in the middle of the city. If anything, he’ll most likely expand on the city over the next few years, seeing as how his battle with Kadaj took place at an unfinished building.

Another issue debated about was Rufus hiding for 2 whole years. I tend to think the answer is no! People only assumed this because Cloud wasn’t aware that Rufus was alive, but I’m sure the people knew. In fact, there is a chance that Cloud could have known as well. Think about it, how would this new city appear out of nowhere, along with a fancy monument? I remember I said that Cloud wouldn’t hear and get involved with rumors, but my friend and I just had a debate and I no longer support the idea. Cloud could have heard many rumors about Rufus’ survival and how he was the creator of the city, Edge. He probably just kept lying to himself and didn’t want to believe it. This will explain why his reaction to when Rufus revealed himself to him was so…emotionless. He wasn’t fazed at all. So in a sense, I guess it’s a case were “oh, so the rumors were true after all!” If anything, I like the idea of Tiffa knowing Rufus was alive before Cloud. I say this because I recall a scene were Cloud says “I have to talk to Rufus,” right in front of Tiffa. But she was not surprised. Even if she was in an emotional state at the time, I’m sure she would have asked him “what is that supposed to mean?” It’s quite possible that she knew of his survival, but didn’t want to tell Cloud.

The final issues regard Shin-Ra Company’s reconstruction. Even though everybody has their own views, it kind of bugs me how so many people consider the company “defunct” without solid proof. In my eyes, Advent Children gives numerous hints that the Company is functioning, but I’ll go into that later. I mean really, just because the main headquarters of the Company was wrecked, doesn’t mean Shin-Ra is gone. Many individuals seem to forget that Shin-Ra had the whole world in their claws, they practically owned it. Even though their base was in Midgar, another major location is Junon, which remained untouched during meteor. So it’s quite likely Rufus simply moved Shin-Ra HQ to Junon. I highly doubt he’ll make a Shin-Ra Tower again; he’ll probably just slightly expand on the Shin-Ra building in Junon, without taking away Junon’s beauty. Besides, can you recall all the manipulation Rufus pulled off in Junon to affect the Shin-Ra HQ, all the way in Midgar? So to me, Junon also holds a large portion of the company, which is still there. So quite frankly, it’s kind of odd considering the company as dead seeing how it practically owned the world. In the game, 70%-80% of the various worlds were related to Shin-Ra somehow, and to me, that is something that just can’t change.

Now, as for the money issues, I don’t think there are any major ones. Rufus owns the Golden Saucer, and other small organizations throughout the game, so I’d imagine Rufus was still making money while he was unconscious in the hospital for the past few months. Quite frankly, if Reeve can build a small organization, then Rufus can indeed rebuild his empire, maybe not to its old potential, but up to a respective point. I doubt the Shin-Ra army will be needed, seeing as how Shin-Ra won’t need protection anymore, since their no longer the criminals. Rufus would probably just hire more members for the Turks, if anything.

Don’t forget, Reeve worked for Rufus till the very end, so I’m sure Rufus owed Reeve money for his services, and then Reeve probably used some of the money to build the WRO. I won’t be surprised if Rufus is linked to the WRO, but that’s another debate.

Now there are the hints in Advent Children that indicate the company is running to some extent. The one I’m sure most of us overlooked is the fact that everybody has power! Correct me if I’m wrong, but Rufus’ Company was responsible for supplying power to the planet. So I tend to imagine that after Midgar was whipped out, towns and other places close by had no electricity for the longest while, meaning the rest of the world most likely relied on Mako generators until the Shin-Ra Company was up and running again. As for the energy being used in AC, I guess it’s still leftover Mako they drained from the years. I doubt the people can willingly return it.

I think after Rufus recovered, he worked his ass off to get everything up and running in Junon. Of course he did have Geostigma during this time, but I guess it wasn’t so bad that it prevented him from working at the time. So if Cloud knew the Company was still running to some extent, then why didn’t he do anything? This fits with my theory. He probably thought somebody else was responsible for supplying power to Edge and other towns. And besides, Cloud didn’t bother trying to stop Rufus’ weakened Company in the movie because Cloud was more worried about the SHM, which were more important at the time. The same thing happened in the game, his attention shifted from the Shin-Ra, to Sephiroth.

To make this review shorter, I typed the hints that support Shin-Ra still operating in list form.

1. Tseng and Elena still have their ID cards. Why would a defunct Company need them?

2. Rufus speaks of his Company in the present tense. “It goes without saying that my Company and I are the ones who put the word in the sorry state it’s in.” Being the proper grammar guy he is, he would have referred to his company as “defunct” if it was out of commission, which he didn’t.

3. Reno and Rude make a brief Shinra joke in the ending of the film, relating to their technology. Seeing as how they both deeply respect the Shin-Ra Company, I don’t think they would be making jokes about it if it was out of commission.

*FINAL POINT!*

Rufus is a person who tends to except things, and move on, without looking back. This characteristic is displayed when he flew from Junon to the Shin-Ra HQ to claim his rightful place as President, hours within his father’s death. Reviews say that he was supposed to wait till the Welcoming Ceremony, but it looked like he just couldn’t. (Some think he went there to mock his fathers dead body. :P) This brings me to the Shin-Ra logo he has hanging up in his Healing Lodge. If the Company was gone, I think the Shin-Ra logo is last thing Rufus would want to see, especially hung up on a wall and in a neat frame. That would simply support his fathers views, which I’m sure was “Rufus would fail and lose everything.” Quite frankly, it shows me that it’s running to some extent, maybe not it’s best, but so good that it can run while he is absent from his illness.

Hope you like my review; I look forward to your comments.
