Fai slowly walked to the place where he had agreed to meet Kurogane. He wasn't looking forward to spending time alone with him as every time they had time alone he was forced to eat. The ninja was too stubborn for his own good.
He hoped that all they were going to be doing was looking for a place to stay. Maybe he would search for his own place once Kurogane found one. He didn't want to be forced to interact with the man that was forcing him to live too much.
He stopped near Kurogane, certain that he sensed him approaching.
"Have I kept you waiting long?" He asked coldly. He knew that he could only delay this for so long before Kurogane would search him out himself. It was better to just go to him.
And he had the feeling that no matter how much Kurogane wanted, he would never enjoying feeding. Welcoming it was also a long shot. He never liked feeling like a leech;draining Kurogane of his life in order to survive himself.
Kurogane had sensed him coming and had turned to meet him as he approached. He had expected the cold stare and venomous voice, and it made a hard stone pull on his stomach. Though he could only remain emotionless and look him in the eye, because anything else would be vehemently unaccepted by the man standing before him.
"Not too long." He muttered in response, though it had been a been a bit of a lengthy wait. He finally turned away from Fai's cold stare, unable to hold the gaze with eyes that didn't look familiar to him. He was used to the sadness, but not the anger directed solely at him on the surface. He was used to the hidden desire to reach out, but not the open withdrawing that dared Kurogane to defy him of his privacy on the outside.
"Come on." He said after a long moment, sighing heavily. Nothing had changed, and he should have prepared himself for the cold venom that Fai was throwing at him. He cursed himself for that.
There were days when Fai wondered how much he was hurting Kurogane. Later he would tell himself that he didn't care, because the ninja was being foolish. No one would want to keep someone like him alive. No one who knew what had happened to him before this journey.
"That's good." He said coolly, finding more interest in their surroundings than the man before him. He had to push him away no matter what. It didn't matter how much it hurt them both as long as no one else was killed for his sake. He just couldn't handle it anymore.
He nodded briefly in an almost militaristic manner. He waited for Kurogane to start leading the way for they were looking for a place for him to stay. It only made sense that he would be the one to decided on where they would be going.
Kurogane was hurt, though he wasn't really aware of it. He was a master of hiding things from people, and this included himself. It would go as far to be titled in big red letters DENILE. Of course, even if he did not know it subconsciously, he did show the physical signs of it; the refusal to meet Fai's gaze along with a few other things, which Fai would have been able to pick up on if he had cared to look.
Still, all this remained unknown to the ninja who naively believed he had such control over himself in such ways. He simply started to walk in a, rather random, direction, glancing back only once to confirm that Fai was indeed following him. It wouldn't do to have Fai agree to come and then take off on him.
"Hn." He muttered in response. He paused for a long moment, knowing the answer to the question even before he asked it. Oh well, he needed to get some conversation going or else this adventure was going to be tense, dull, and an explosion waiting to happen. "Did you find a place to stay yet?"
Its wasn't that Fai didn't care to look. No, it was that he was afraid that his resolved to push Kurogane away would melt by just one too careful of a glance. His life wasn't something that Kurogane could control. Not even now.
Fai followed him silently, wondering if he knew where he wanted to go already. He hadn't planned on running over during their little excursion, but he was thinking about doing so. Only if the subject of feeding were to come up or something of equal sensitivity. Then again, Kurogane would hunt him down if he did run off.
"No." He answered shortly, wanting to avoid conversation. He didn't want this to become more awkward than it already was. He already felt antsy and tense and they've barely spoken since their initial greeting.
Kurogane couldn't help but look annoyed, eyebrow twitching slightly. He wanted to blame it on Fai for completely avoiding a simple question, especially because the question wasn't a direct attack at him or his aggravating way of trying to escape. Though, Kurogane knew he couldn't really blame Fai for it, it was just a lot more easier to blame him.
And Fai was right, if he tried to run Kurogane wouldn't let him get away easily. It was probably selfish of him, just like all the other drastic things he had done to change the vampires life, but he wasn't going to lose him over something so trivial.
He kept walking without saying anything for a long while, trying to keep himself from getting growling at him. Though, not knowing where he was was probably not going to help his anger. He should probably learn to curb that.
"Have any idea where we're going?" He asked, failing horribly at trying not to sound annoyed.
Avoiding was what Fai did best. Avoidance was a sure-fire way to get away from what caused him pain or made him uncomfortable. He knew, though, that there were sine things that he couldn't avoid forever.
"No, I don't." He said, looking bored. Kurogane had been there longer than he had, so he should have a better understanding of the place. "I'm following you."
"Bah." Kurogane murmured. "I wasn't here that long before you showed up." And he was secretly glad that Fai had. Even if Fai would rather avoid him, Kurogane found that he could rest better if he knew Fai was here and safe. Of course, he still had the one problem that he had to solve.
This one was harder due to the fact that Fai's refusal would hinder his efforts to resolve it. Fai would need to feed. Kurogane knew that Fai would rather not, his wish to die so strong, but, same as Kurogane being as selfish as before, would force him to eat whether the blond liked it or not.
"Maybe we should find you a place while we're at it." He commented idly.
"Then why would I have a better sense of the place than you?" Fai asked, staying a good distance away from Kurogane. He felt comforted by his presence despite his better judgment.
And he wouldn't feed unless Kurogane forced. Just like he's been doing. Just because he wanted to die didn't mean that he wanted the ninja to die also. He didn't want more people dying for him.
"If you want." He said in an offhand manner. He really didn't care at the moment. He would be happy just sleeping on the streets or finding a hotel. They didn't even have money yet. Or at least he thought so.
Kurogane didn't necessarily like talking to someone when he couldn't see his face, and so slowed down to fall into step beside him. Besides, since he had no idea where he was going along with Fai, he was no longer leading. They were wandering, just like old times.
"You're better with directions than I am." He admitted idly, and this was the truth. Fai had a certain intuition that made him very good at choosing direction. It was probably an ability derived from his magic, but Kurogane wasn't going to complain. Often that intuition helped him just as much as Fai's inability to fight properly got him in trouble.
Kurogane looked slightly annoyed again. "We'll find you a place to stay." He confirmed, more for his benefit than Fai's. He wasn't going to worry over Fai if Fai didn't have a home because he was going to make sure he didn't have to worry.
Fai tensed when Kurogane dropped back to walk with him. He was getting too close for his comfort. His scent was making the hunger pains worse and he could almost hear the beating of his heart. It disturbed him so much that he almost felt nauseous.
"I have to know where my destination is just like everyone else." He said, feeling a bit proud that Kurogane had said that he was better at something then him. It was rare that such an admittance could be pulled from the ninja. He had a feeling though that the ninja would credit it to his magic. That would mean that his sense of direction would be halved.
"I can take care of myself." He said, sounding a bit indigent. He could hear the underlying worry in the other man's voice and he knew that no matter how much he protested, Kurogane would make sure that he had a place to live that was preferably close to him.
Kurogane glanced at him curiously for a moment before digging his hands into his pockets and glancing foreword again, a thoughtful look on his face. Was it his imagination or was Fai tense, more so than usual. Not that Fai would say anything if he asked.
He had always had to rely on Fai's physical signs than his actual words anyway. That's how he had always guessed at what Fai didn't tell him because Fai would give it away, whether he noticed it or not. It was always on his face in some form.
"You look hungry." Kurogane commented idly, though when he glanced at Fai he was sure Fai knew that he wasn't simply commenting. He had noticed that about Fai with his curious glance as well. He wasn't going to say anything else about it, since they're current mission was to find them both a place to stay, but he was going to get back to it soon. Preferably before Fai started to feel the affects of going without food for too long.
Fai hated it when Kurogane was thinking because it usually meant that he was thinking about him. He mostly hated it because he knew that the ninja was pyschoanalyzing him and it made him very uncomfortable to know that.
It was taking all of his will to not just pounce on his prey at this point. He wished that Kurogane realized just how much his promixty to him was affecting him. It drove him nuts to know that he was right there and that he was hunger. Starving almost, but not quite yet at that point. He shuffled a way from the taller man a bit, hoping to keep himself out of the grasps of temptation.
"I'm fine." Fai said coldly, not liking the tone Kurogane used. He knew that it was meant the be lazy and that he was trying to keep the conversation going. All he could do know that he had noticed that he was hungry was delay the feeding as long as possible. There was never any guarantee how long that could be.
Kurogane usually was thinking about him in some way. It was borderline obsession most likely. Of course, he blamed that on Fai too. He got under his skin in every way possible, and even when the man wasn't trying he was able to get under his skin in some way. Even now, with the not so subtle way of him stepping away from him.
"Right." Kurogane muttered. His priority was not feeding Fai but finding a place to live. He wouldn't necessarily mind if Fai gave into the temptation. He'd rather Fai did that then avoid feeding completely unless he forced him. It would make him feel better too, at least, as better as long could be as they were attacked by a starving vampire.
Though, he could say that this was a good time to mention that Fai should live with him since they were already on the topic of his hunger and certain diet. "We should probably look for an apartment together."
It was that Fai was still trying to get under his skin. It was that he was already in and he was trying hard to pull out the barb without tearing Kurogane apart. The problem was that everytime he tried to get away, Kurogane just forced the barb right back in.
Fai let out a soft sigh. He knew that Kurogane wouldn't believe him. He never did. He hated it when he wasn't even hungry and he was forced to eat anyway. He was a bit surprised that Kurogane wasn't pushing the topic at the moment.
"Together?" Fai asked, glaring at him. "What makes you think I want to live with you?"
Fai was already tearing Kurogane apart without having to pull on anything. Kurogane didn't know it then, once again referring to the file with the big red letters of denile, but the pain that Fai caused him was caused by Fai alone. That barb was in his skin, and pulling it out would rip and sting, but that would eventually heal. The poision from that barb though had already reached his heart, and that's what would cause the wound to continue to hurt
( ... )
