---All Fall Down, One Republic
It always started with him feeling jittery. Like there was too much energy pent up inside that he couldn’t release and something was just going to burst if it didn’t. Which, to be fair, was true. Remus made it a point to avoid anything with caffeine or sugar a few days before the full moon, he didn’t need to add to it. Plus it gave him a headache.
As sunset neared, Remus made his way to the hospital wing, as he did every month. Now that he was older he didn’t require an escort to the Whomping Willow, but he did have to check in and let someone know he was going. Which was always helpful for when he didn’t feel like going all the way out to the Shrieking Shack, and instead hid out in the Forbidden Forest until James, Sirius and Peter could meet him. But tonight he would be going to the Shrieking Shack. Tonight he wasn’t taking anyone with him.
James was hurt, not to mention missing. The last thing Remus wanted was to hurt Sirius or Peter. Without James it would be harder to control him, and he didn’t want to risk scratching either one of them, or crushing Peter in his rat form. No, it was too risky, too dangerous, and he would not be the cause of his friends’ injury. He just couldn’t do it. So he’d left telling Sirius and Peter he was just going to return a book to the library and he’d be right back before he left. He just hoped they’d stay in the common room and not come looking for him.
He used a stick to freeze the Whomping Willow, and made his way down the lonely passage and out past the Hogwarts grounds until he could smell the difference in the air and knew he was coming up to the Shrieking Shack. This close to transformation his own senses were highly acute. He smelled something else too, something foreign to the shack but familiar to him, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. It was so faint. Very far away, maybe in the Shack itself.
He checked his watch. He had about a half hour before he transformed, give or take ten minutes. His fingers were already starting to shake and there was a persistent ache in his chest that seemed to get worse with every step he took.
“Just get inside. Get upstairs,” he whispered to himself.
His feet hit the end of the tunnel and he pulled himself through the hole and into the Shack. It felt so different without the others. Like the way it used to before they’d learned to transform. Remus shuddered violently and kept walking, making his way through the house, the familiar smell getting stronger. Curiosity got the better of him and he followed it, turning into a room and spotting-
“James Potter what the hell are you doing in here?!”
