A word to the wise. If you ever think it's a good idea to fill hours and hours with YouTube videos of last years American Idol performers, keep in mind that a) you will get nothing done, and b) you'll walk around humming "Please Don't Stop the Music" all day. *hums ( Read more... )

I think i'm about to fall into that same trap. I haven't watched any American Idol since season 3, but i managed to fall off the wagon last night, and i really want to see the performances from earlier this season.

Last night was horrible. Between the awkward history of disco performance by whoever the hell those "disco greats" were and the out of breath and awkward vocal stylings of David Archuleta, and the fact that Seacrest turns into more of a jerk with every week, I don't think there was anything good about last night. Maybe perhaps the fact that Anoop and Lil were very classy with their exits.

(I find David Archuleta creepy. I can't think of girls going nuts over him. He's like, twelve.)

Oops, i lied - meant Tuesday night's episode. I had it recorded on my DVR; i watched it yesterday, then caught the last 10 minutes of of last night's elimination ep. I was sad to see Anoop go - it was nice to see another Indian dude rocking the spotlight :-)

I think this year there's a lot of people who have gotten attached to performers who aren't *that* great, but keep getting to stay there because they have fans. Danny Gokey I think is a good example of this - he's okay, but he's certainly shouldn't win. I also think Adam Lambert is good, but I can't stand the "wild" performances he has - he seems a bit overhyped. Anoop was consistently okay on slower songs, ballad-type songs, but every once in a while he'd come out with a faster pace song that sounded horrible.

Yeah, and i think that plays into a flaw in the show's system - the fanboys (or fangirls) keep certain performers in the game even if they're not as good as others. I remember during season 3, there were a few really excellent singers who got eliminated because they had similar styles and had to compete over the same fanbase. It might be more consistent if they'd switch to an elimination vote (i.e. call in and vote for who you want to send home).

I have to concede that Anoop and Lil were probably the right choices (based on just the one episode i've seen). Do you have any favorites? Mine (again, based on just the one ep) is Kris. Possibly because he played guitar, which (for me, at least) completely shattered the "Karaoke Idol" image that drove me away from the show in the first place.

Actually, one of the many YouTube videos that I wasted my time on the other day was a Larry King interview with last year's top ten and that question was asked, if it would be better to have people call with a vote for who should go home. They (the performers) were kinda ambivalent on the idea, but I tend to think that this would encourage even more shallow voting. It could go the other way and the results would be the same (i.e. if I really like Danny Gokey and I perceive another performer as a threat to his winning, then I just repeatedly dial to vote against him and get all my friends to do the same ( ... )

Ok i officially like Adam now. Really nice job with Mad World, and i actually liked his cover of Ring of Fire too (maybe i'm just impressed by his range, and his control in the high registers). As for Kris - oh my, he plays piano too! Awesome performance of "Ain't No Sunshine". I fell in love with that song when i heard the Lighthouse Family version that Andrew plays sometimes, so anyone who sings that song well can win me over.

Ok, back to work; i'll have to save more youtubing for later.

Oh, and you're probably right about the voting. I guess it's always subjective and imperfect whenever popular vote is involved. Especially a setup like this where it's not just a matter of how many people like you, but how crazy those fans are (and if they're willing to hit redial for an hour).
