A word to the wise. If you ever think it's a good idea to fill hours and hours with YouTube videos of last years American Idol performers, keep in mind that a) you will get nothing done, and b) you'll walk around humming "Please Don't Stop the Music" all day. *hums ( Read more... )

Actually, one of the many YouTube videos that I wasted my time on the other day was a Larry King interview with last year's top ten and that question was asked, if it would be better to have people call with a vote for who should go home. They (the performers) were kinda ambivalent on the idea, but I tend to think that this would encourage even more shallow voting. It could go the other way and the results would be the same (i.e. if I really like Danny Gokey and I perceive another performer as a threat to his winning, then I just repeatedly dial to vote against him and get all my friends to do the same.)

Lil was definitely the right choice to send home, though Seacrest could have been a bit less of an ass about how he told her. She's been trying to sing these huge songs that she doesn't have the voice for, and it seems like the judges have to keep telling her the same thing every week.

I like Kris the best, I suppose. I feel he's been fairly consistent, even though I doubt he'll win. Adam has too big of a fanbase. Adam's a good performer, but he keeps switching back and forth from songs I like (Mad World) and songs I hate (Play that Funky Music) (which ensures that I'll never buy anything from him) and it seems like he's screaming a lot of the time. I think the decision to allow the contestants instruments was just made last year.

If you want to look at good performances so far, you should look at Kris's take on "Ain't No Sunshine" and Adam's "Mad World" just off the top of my head. For a freaky look at why I'm not that crazy about Adam, look at his performance of "Ring of Fire" for Opry week.

Ok i officially like Adam now. Really nice job with Mad World, and i actually liked his cover of Ring of Fire too (maybe i'm just impressed by his range, and his control in the high registers). As for Kris - oh my, he plays piano too! Awesome performance of "Ain't No Sunshine". I fell in love with that song when i heard the Lighthouse Family version that Andrew plays sometimes, so anyone who sings that song well can win me over.

Ok, back to work; i'll have to save more youtubing for later.

Oh, and you're probably right about the voting. I guess it's always subjective and imperfect whenever popular vote is involved. Especially a setup like this where it's not just a matter of how many people like you, but how crazy those fans are (and if they're willing to hit redial for an hour).
