That sounds good. There's a good bakery in the Square, unless you had another place in mind?

[ Mindy Macready is always a punctual person, so it's no surprise that she is there five minutes before the declared time. The motive of this meeting is damage control, sealing up all those cracks and leaks the slug had created in its complete lack of discretion. Firing guns and navigating a vehicle without any type of disguise? Not even a make shift mask made from leaves? Everyone has to play Mcguyver sometime, but a stupid slug is a stupid slug.

She's nabbed a table in the corner of the bakery, one that's set at an angle which catches a warm half-glare from the descending sun. To be honest, this kind of socialization is all new territory. From the age of five, it had been only her dad and her, no one else to intrude their bubble. No friends at school, since she's never attended one. No relatives. Not even Marcus, who had raised her til her fearsome fives.

Not to say she's socially awkward; Mindy's just concerned sometimes that she comes off alarmingly different. Not good for the disguise, you see.]

[This is a matter of curiosity, but more importantly, one of concern. It doesn't take a genius to connect the foul-mouthed little girl who'd saved her life in jeep with the young crack shot who'd killed a man standing beside her, near enough that Cameron had dropped her jacket in a trashcan half a block later without even looking at it. It's not that she worries that Mindy can't take care of herself-- Cameron is many things, often naive to a fault, but she isn't a fool. But she shouldn't have to; seeing a child that young with such harsh opinions, such unforgiving discipline, such disregard for the sanctity of life... It scares her, honestly, but it worries her more ( ... )

[ It's a little harder to conceal your identity when you're stuck in a fishbowl of a City where your most personal details can be broadcasted over an open line any time of the day. And, you know, curses. Mindy tries her best, and here and there, edges of her true self intercept, for constantly lying to the world is a difficult task. With her father around all the time, she could always be herself with only spare moments when she'd have to put up that illusion. Trips of Dunkin' Donuts and Chinese take-out, for instance.

And so, Cameron's suspicions wouldn't be a huge surprise. The doctor's proven herself to be a coward (in Mindy's mind), but she's also shown her intelligence. Why else would Mindy go to all this trouble to repair those suspicions? ]

Nah, I got here a few minutes ago. I know you're busy. [ A well measured smile, not too bright, not too dull. ] You're a doctor.

[ She raises one hand to gesture to the front counter of the bakery. A polychromatic pattern of cupcakes sits on cool metal trays inside the glass display ( ... )

[There aren't that many little girls to blend in with, either; Cameron's noticed that by and large the population of the City tends to be a bit older, and of course the lack of any meaningful structure, a compulsory school system or organized caretakers, means the children who are here seem anomalous. Still. The parasite would be a good excuse for her behavior, one she might even buy, if they hadn't met before.]

I've never tried the cupcakes, but their croissants are fantastic.

[She'll try them today, though, for the same sake of show; if nothing else it'll be something to discuss if other topics run dry.]

So, how are you feeling? No ill effects?

A little tired, kind of bruised, but who wasn't? [ She rises out of her chair to take the lead to the counter. Currently, Mindy is routing out this entire conversation to as much of an extent as she can, keeping tabs on topics and sentences she can throw into the mix for a quick save. ] I'm fine. Except for that paranoia that means I'll be sleeping with cotton balls jammed in my ears for awhile.

[ That joke evokes soft, self-satisfied laughter from the younger girl. Matching the ebullience in her tone, she targets a grin at Cameron, more natural an expression that one might think. She's got a big heart in there, or at least the capacity for a big heart, judging by how much she loved her dad. ]

Some blisters, too. But I'm pretty sure those won't kill me!

[ She flashes her palms for a brief number of seconds, exposing skin spotted with the pale, pink flesh of healing blisters. Here and there, scratches line the creases on her palms, and the hardening of a growing callus mark the top portions and inner curve of her thumb and ( ... )

[She lets Mindy lead; it's not exactly patronizing, more the faint curious freedom one grants to a particularly precocious child, seeing how far they're capable of taking themselves. Not quite necessary, here, gauging boundaries; she's got a good idea of that. But she's interested in seeing how Mindy plays it off. She's good at this, Cameron thinks, smiling in response to the small laugh. It's a little too good, really, too stark a contrast to the other persona she's met.]

I'm glad to hear that. So far, most people we've seen don't seem to have any permanent issues but it's always better to be safe, you know. No problems hearing?

[That's not the clerk's callus small children pick up in school, long hours balancing a pencil. It might not be telling on its own, but it's another piece of information to file away. When it's her turn she picks a cupcake and orders her coffee, not looking at Mindy but still considering her.]

[ Mindy's good because this little girl's not completely out of her element. Even a deranged father couldn't destroy all that innocence and youthful inclination, for she's made out of the same material as resilience. That smile doesn't waver, even as Cameron turns away, for what was once acted becomes more natural with growing ease.

Mindy misses hanging out with her father. Or rather, having someone.]

Nothing worse than that hive of angry bees. I heard that buzzing for a day after that!

[ She picks out a strawberry one for herself, topping that off with a vanilla latte. Sweet on sweet, as prescribed by the typical tastebuds of a teenager. ]

Are your friends- the other two doctors-- are they okay now?

Yes-- thankfully. Dr. Wilson wasn't seriously hurt, and Dr. Chase's injuries have been healing well.

[Which isn't entirely a lie, she never said they were healing well unassisted, but for once she's decided to just accept the existence of magic as alternative medicine. This whole thing has been exhausting, and honestly... the kind of damage the slug had done, Chase needed that alternative.]

I think the buzzing must have been an attempt to get the parasites out, though obviously it didn't work for everyone.

[She gathers up her coffee and her plate, stepping back toward the table once Mindy gets hers.]

Salt water proved to be pretty reliable, though.

[ She follows her past the counter and back toward the counter, easily balancing both cupcake plate and coffee in her hands. ]

I took a bath after that, with lots of salt water. Even if he was gone, I had to be safe.

[ Taking a sip of her latte, she diverts her gaze to study Dr. Cameron's expression. Jotting down mental notes for storage. ]

Is it hard being a doctor here? With all the strange stuff that happens and all the strange people?

Sometimes. When people are hurt or sick because of a curse, we can't always fix them, but we have to do our best in spite of it; and sometimes curses have funny side effects. We once treated a sick boy who had a disease that only affects cats.

[She raises an eyebrow delicately at that and sips her coffee, settling into her seat, legs crossed at the ankles.]

But... all things considered, people are remarkably healthy here. With so many people coming from so many worlds, it's amazing we don't have more unknown illnesses.
