So, yesterday I moved into my college dorm. Whoo! Today is finally drawing to a close, and while I probably should be at this house social thing, I'm...not. I was late and couldn't figure out where it was and ANYWAY
Moving in was difficult. I live in Ghetto Hall, basically. It has no air conditioning, tiled rooms--my friend has both AC and carpet--an elevator that looks like it came from the Soviet bloc era and that people apparently often piss in, and is the only hall not to have been renovated in the last few years. We can't have microwaves because they'll short something out.
I'm also on the fifth floor, so we had to carry all my crap up five flights of stairs--we had not yet discovered the elevator--in the middle of August in Missouri. For those of you who aren't in Missouri, that means it's not only hot, but so humid you can practically swim. If I took my fish outside, they would probably live for five minutes longer than they would inside. So that was fun.
Then I had to go tromp around doing activities and attending meetings and all of that. By the end of the day, my feet hurt so bad I seriously considered chopping them off. It was hot and sticky, so I slept poorly, but at least I got to sleep at a decent time. This morning I woke up at 10:30 and then went to breakfast, which consisted of hot applesauce and cherry coke. Oh, and half a glass of apple juice that tasted more like vaguely apple-flavored chlorine than anything else.
I've been going around to presentations and class-like things all day, with a small block of free time in the middle and now a much larger block since, you know, skipping the stupid social thing. Woohoo! I also finally got connected to the internet, so that's cool.
So far, I'm enjoying myself. I like my roommates, and we had an interesting bonding experience over sexual assault (whoo?) earlier. I also talked with one of my suitemates a little at breakfast, and she seems pretty cool. Living in a little room with two other people--fun facts! My room was supposed to be a double, but they crammed a third bed in here. The last girl to get here ended up with a desk that doesn't have any outlets behind it--is a little weird, but I'm doing okay. I honestly imagined that it would be harder than it has been. And while being able to say I survived C-Hall is sort of fun, I'm definitely going to sign up a lot earlier next year, so I can get my first choice of hall. I don't want to not have air conditioning again. One of my roommates got approved for a window unit, but we won't get it for a while. We'll also get a microfridge eventually, but until then, we're keeping our fridgey objects--a twelve pack of Coke--in one of those foam fishing bait containers. Whoo.
I spoke to one of the SAs about bringing my crabs, and he tried to tell me that I can bring a crab tank as long as it doesn't have any crabs in it. (Really, dude? Why do you think I specifically said 'crab tank'?) I've read through the pet guidelines several times, and as far as I can tell, I can bring fish, amphibians, and their ilk so long as the tank is under thirty gallons and they aren't poisonous. My tank is ten gallons and hermit crabs are definitely not poisonous, so. If I can't bring them, I'm going to be pretty upset. My mom is already taking care of my fish, and I'm afraid she'll forget about the crabs. They can go a while without being taken care of, but not an entire year.
The shower is also ridiculously tiny, and keeping my left ear out of the water was hard. I'm afraid I fucked my graft up, though, because I sneezed last night with my mouth closed and it made my ear go "fwfwfwfwfw" for a while, and this morning it was oozing greenish-brown stuff. I put a cotton ball covered in neosporin in there, and it came out sort of greenish, so I'm concerned. If it starts hurting or oozing really bad, I'll go see the nurse or head over to the hospital, but my follow-up with the guy who did the tympanoplasty is in like a week, so I'm going to wait unless it needs urgent attention. If I did pop the graft off, then it'll need to be fixed surgically, so my options will be the hospital here or waiting for my follow-up in a week, so.
My desk is somehow five times more cluttered than everyone else's. I also haven't played my PS2 or used my record player yet, which is a shame. But never fear! These things will definitely happen. In fact, I'm getting ready to go have me some video game time while the roommates are away.
