Sounds like a failing harddrive to me. Try to get everything copied over from that drive first, and then try one of the low-level formatting utilities like Spinrite to see if you need a new drive.
That is not what I want to hear as I have NO way of copying off that data to anywhere else, I don't have any other drives here big enough to do so! The drive in question is a 500 gig drive with about 250-300 gigs that would have to be moved off of it.

Right-click My Computer and choose manage.
Click the plus sign next to Event Viewer.
Click System so it's highlighted.
Scroll through the log and see if you have any error events and what they are. Sometimes the messages are kind of inscrutable, but any errors that involve the hard drive are a Bad Thing.

I probalby would have just said, well, that's Windows for you.
You can look at the system even log, too, and see if you're getting any kind of hardware errors showing in the system log. That might help.
