“Yes ma’am, I realise that this is very strange. Ma’am… Ma’am I don’t think we can reasonably expect that of them. No ma’am, I don’t think they’d do that. I think they’d simply not contact us again, at least not for a while until we change our minds. With all due respect Madam President it’s been twelve years in another galaxy with out any contact with us, making their own friends and families. To expect them to come home and still consider themselves American, or Canadian, or even Tau’ri is a bit much,” explained Sam wearily.

There was a nock at the door and Daniel put his head in curiously and General Samantha Carter pointed to the seat in front of her. He could tell that she was worried about something, and guessed it had something to do with recent events. President Kathryn Tatum was a good woman, strong willed and intelligent, but she did have her flaws like any other person. Her resistance to accepting the situation and the people involved…. No, that wasn’t fair. She’d never been through anything like they had. Expecting her to understand was unfair.

“Atlantis?” mouthed Daniel.

Sam nodded, not eving breathing a word.

“Yes ma’am I know. Permission to speak freely? They’re not the same people they were. Rodney McKay as a married man is so strange to us that we sat around with our mouths open for five minutes. Frankly, I don’t think Anubis deciding to repent and volunteering with Oxfam could have surprised us more. They’ve had to learn to change and adapt, they’ve had to lean on each other and frankly ma’am who doesn’t change in twelve years even under normal circumstances? They’ve gone up against an enemy different to anything we’ve ever seen before, let alone thought of. Their tactics will have changed, their ways of dealing with things will have changed, and I think basing our own reactions on what it is that we have on their profiles is a big mistake.”

Daniel got up and poured her a cup of coffee before placing it infront of her. The two of them and Teal’c were probably the most experienced when it came to situations like these, and trying to get people who hadn’t gone through what they had to understand what was going on now would be hard.

The idea that a group of people, led by an American, could declare themselves independent could be anything other than threcherous was alien.

The idea that those same people bore neither her nation nor her world any ill will was hard for the President to understand. She hadn’t been military, she hadn’t been in any situation requiring the kind of bonding that SG teams had had, and she was dealing with it as best as any outsider could.

As frustrating as that could be.

“I know they won’t attack us because not only have they told me as much, but because I know in their situation I wouldn’t. Ma’am, I think I’m in more of a position to tell you what they are likely to do than your advisors in Washington. Dr Jackson and many of the civilians here would be more qualified than them for that matter. No, I can’t say for sure they won’t make knowledge of the Stargate public, but frankly we don’t have the authority to stop them anymore. That said I don’t think they’d do that if we asked them not to…”

It was going to be a long, long night.

“How far along do you think they are?” asked Ford

“Likely, they’re not to far beyond the ‘they will not hurt us’ round of events” Rodney responded. He knew just how paranoid governments could be. Especially the ones those Americans with their so-called ‘Football’ elected. American ‘Football’ was really no more than a watered down version of Rugby with several layers of padding.

“Nah, they’re on to the part where Carter and Jackson are trying to convince the President that we’re not traitors, and aren’t going to go in and ruin their policies.” John countered.

“Don’t ask don’t tell?”

“Of course, what else would they be worried about? Here we are, with a base that has happily married gay military people. It hasn’t affected our work, our moral, or anything except make it better. They’re scared we’re going to go in and change their policies on it.”

“We might you know”

John just shrugged at that. They might change a few policies, but they weren’t setting out to do that. Well, maybe with the exception of flaunting the United Atlantis Military’s policies on such matters, a policy that he liked to call ‘who cares? Not us!’

“Madam President, I can assure you we’re not trying to play you because we’re friends with these people.” It was now Daniel’s go at convincing the President that all was fine, and that they should actually help the Atlantians.

“Yes ma’am, I’m sure that you’ve been told otherwise. I’m sure it might seem like that but… Ma’am it isn’t like that. We just understand their position better than anyone. Yes, especially… I do still consider Abydos a home even though it doesn’t exist anymore. They’ve just been there a long time, with each other and with out us… No I don’t think that having us now will change that. They’re not traitors and they are good people who have gone up against things that most of Earth, including its leaders, can’t imagine.” Daniel sighed. Then sighed again. This was going in circles.

“No, I don’t think they’re going to storm in here demanding anything of us that isn’t reasonable. They probably only want a chance to visit their families and friends left on Earth. Madam President I…”

John and Rodney were sitting in the cafeteria having dinner. Even after all this time most people still came here to eat and tonight was no different for either of them. Their ninth aniversary was coming up in two weeks and as per usual there was going to be a ‘surprise’ for them. Wasn’t much of a surprise, it happened every year, and every year they would go and act surprised instead of recreating their wedding night.
Over the years as they’d taken in refugees, many orphans had come to Atlantis, all of them needing homes to go to. One day eight years ago John had taken it upon himself to adopt one, much the initial annoyance of Rodney. Since then, other gay couples had done the same, not able to have children of their own (though Carson was working on that). It was something of a norm now to see two men wandering around the city with their son or daughter. And so, it was when Rodney was staring at his Athosian meat pie that a twelve girl walked in, coming over to them almost immediately.

“Dad? Do you know if I’ll get to visit earth and stuff? Your parents and Pa’s sister?”

“Maybe. But you’re not visiting untill we’re sure we could get back home, and that you’d be safe,” John answered sternly. Well, sternly for John in any case. He knew she wanted to see the planet that her fathers had come from, but they needed to be careful about it.

“But da~ad….!”

“Shau’ni! You are not going untill we know it’s safe, no one is. Especially you and the other children.”

And with that, Shau’ni Sheppard-McKay, age twelve, stormed off and out of the cafeteria leaving a pair of bemused parents behind.

“So John, how exactly do you think the President will react to us having a daughter?”

“What do you mean they have children?!” the voice, though over the telephone, was loud and clear to anybody in Sam’s office. The President of the United States of America, it seemed, was ready to hear about aliens living on earth, humans living on alien planets, but wasn’t ready to hear about two men having a daughter. All in all, Sam, Daniel and Teal’c (who had since joined them) found it funny. Not that they’d tell anyone of course.

“Colonel and Dr. McKay-Sheppard have a twelve year old daughter. Most of the Atlantian people have children, adopted or otherwise. Apparently there are a lot of orphans in Pegasus.”

“Let me get this straight then. These people went to Atlantis, got stranded there, disregarded the rules, later changed the rules to their own purposes, got married, had children and when they discovered they may have to deal with Earth again ,they decide to move around the rules by declaring themselves a nation independent from Earth?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Are you absolutely sure that I’m not hallucinating?”

“Yes ma’am”

John looked up from his food at his husband and grinned cheekily as if he were still twenty.

“Not very well.”

Rodney, it had to be said, didn’t react much better and had an equally cheeky grin on his face.

“Isn’t that a shame?”

At that, their grins turned into smiles as they imagined some stuffy President from an old film trying to deal with it all. Earth, despite all warnings from the SGC, weren’t ready for the Atlantians.

After Sam hung up the red phone there was only one noise left in the room: her head pounding her desk repeatedly.
