I've been playing for a long time, but am a very impatient player which does not lend itself to actually doing well in this game. For the first time, I have made it down to Medusa! But from reading others' posts here, I think I am missing a lot of key ingredients (in particular levitation, but perhaps also greasing my cloak or other things that I ( Read more... )

You don't strictly need levitation to deal with Medusa; you can dig down anywhere on her level, end up on DL 22, and then go up the up stairs. If you have reflection you don't even need to be blind. :)

The statue of Perseus might have a (guaranteed-cursed) means of levitation, as well.

I would hesitate before going after her this way, though, simply because you don't have any means of magic resistance, and if you do end up trapped on DL 21 or lower, you'll start really wanting magic resistance.

Alternately, you could get some scrolls of earth and use them plus your jumping boots to try to make your way across the islands. If you do this (or if you levitate across), be sure your cloak (whatever kind of cloak it is by then) is greased (and remember that grease wears off after you've been grabbed often enough).

I was wondering about that - I'd read a few posts back in this community about someone who dug down and then just came back up to get Medusa. But then I think, wouldn't you just be stuck down there, then? But I suppose the theory is that somewhere down below you find the waterwalking boots or a means of levitation for the journey back up. Or teleporting.

Scroll of earth is an interesting idea if I can find some grease (or an oilskin cloak).

That was me who dug down from the Medusa level and came back up--and yeah, one of the things I had to do while I was down in the Castle was acquire a means of levitation to actually re-cross the Medusa level. Fortunately, the Castle provides a way to do that. ;)

Cool. Actually I happened across a random pair of cursed -1 levitation boots, so I've removed the curse and now I just need an enchantment scroll to fix the -1 part. So I should be able to defeat her once I get back down there :)
