Help Requested!

I've been playing for a long time, but am a very impatient player which does not lend itself to actually doing well in this game. For the first time, I have made it down to Medusa! But from reading others' posts here, I think I am missing a lot of key ingredients (in particular levitation, but perhaps also greasing my cloak or other things that I ( Read more... )

I usually do Mine's End before I do Sokoban, so my suggestion would be to go back up and do that...if you haven't been down to the Mines yet, there's guaranteed shops in Minetown, at least.

You're having issues with Levitation, I would guess, because it's a high-level spell in Escape, which you're unskilled in. Try to find a robe-it'll give you a bonus to spell-casting and might actually make Levitation cast-able.

I have been in the mines and through minetown (not much useful there for shops, and the wrong type of altar). Actually I did make it all the way down to mine's end, it's just that as soon as I went down the stairs the entry room was full of baddies, and at that point I was maybe XL 6 or 7 and they did a number on me, so I barely escaped. And then I went back up and did sokoban and just continued down into the main dungeon. So I've been all the way down there, just wasn't able to grab the luckstone.

I started with a robe but it got burned up by a fire ant and then stolen by a nymph who I never did find again way back in the early levels. Then I found the displacement cloak and have been wearing it ever since. I'm thinking I'll write a magic mapping scroll with the few charges left in my magic marker and use it on one of the levels I went through very quickly in hopes of finding a store that has some useful things.

You don't strictly need levitation to deal with Medusa; you can dig down anywhere on her level, end up on DL 22, and then go up the up stairs. If you have reflection you don't even need to be blind. :)

The statue of Perseus might have a (guaranteed-cursed) means of levitation, as well.

I would hesitate before going after her this way, though, simply because you don't have any means of magic resistance, and if you do end up trapped on DL 21 or lower, you'll start really wanting magic resistance.

Alternately, you could get some scrolls of earth and use them plus your jumping boots to try to make your way across the islands. If you do this (or if you levitate across), be sure your cloak (whatever kind of cloak it is by then) is greased (and remember that grease wears off after you've been grabbed often enough).

I was wondering about that - I'd read a few posts back in this community about someone who dug down and then just came back up to get Medusa. But then I think, wouldn't you just be stuck down there, then? But I suppose the theory is that somewhere down below you find the waterwalking boots or a means of levitation for the journey back up. Or teleporting.

Scroll of earth is an interesting idea if I can find some grease (or an oilskin cloak).

That was me who dug down from the Medusa level and came back up--and yeah, one of the things I had to do while I was down in the Castle was acquire a means of levitation to actually re-cross the Medusa level. Fortunately, the Castle provides a way to do that. ;)

Cool. Actually I happened across a random pair of cursed -1 levitation boots, so I've removed the curse and now I just need an enchantment scroll to fix the -1 part. So I should be able to defeat her once I get back down there :)

1) Get unburdened. Lock your spellbooks in a chest somewhere -- they're heavy and you can go back for them later if you know what they are. Also why are you carrying around that spear ( ... )

No, you can sacrifice other things than unicorns to convert an altar.

You can sacrifice any fresh (not rotten, not undead) corpse in an attempt to convert the altar. Don't try it with @'s, and be especially careful with unicorns -- probably best to wait until you have it converted, and never sacrifice a unicorn of your own alignment.

The easiest thing to do is find a level with monsters and an altar and get going. Bag of tricks and create monster wands/scrolls/spell can be handy for that too.

I do #offer corpses at lawful altars when I find them, but since there weren't any in this game I just figured I was out of luck. Somehow the big unicorn table on the altar wiki page about which color unicorns to sacrifice when to convert altars made me think that was the only way to do it. Now that I know I can just do any (well, big enough) corpse there, I will definitely go do so ( ... )

Your blog looks nice, even so it would be far better if you’ll be able to use lighter colors too as a professional design. This will make sure that a lot more readers come to check it out.Informative post by the way!
