A few months after Kat and Shine spent their first Thanksgiving at Kat’s parent’s house and about a year after they met, and six month or so after Joseph had literally shone Kat his fangs. The boys were lounging about in the living room of the house that Shine lived in with his master Joseph. Joseph was gone for the evening. What he was doing Kat didn’t want to know, but he wasn’t expected back until close to dawn. They’d cooked, eaten, and cleaned up their dinner and were drinking beer and sitting together on the sofa, mostly ignoring some sappy family drama on the TV. But the TV show prompted Kat to ask Shine about his parents. “You told me that you didn’t live with your parents when you were young. Where did you live?”

“I lived in a Crèche, that’ kind of like a group home and nursery school rolled into one until I was six years old. My mother stayed there until I was about two. Believe it or not they have always preferred breast feeding over bottles. How long they can stay with their babies depends on how soon there masters want them back, and most cases are dealt with individually. But most get to stay until the babies are weaned and mostly toilet trained. There are no hard rules.”

“So did you get to see her again? What about your father?”

“I got phone calls and letters and gifts in the mail regularly. My father came and visited at the crèche a few times. He lived pretty far from the there and couldn’t come often.

“When we turn six we go the big school. It runs on a year round schedule with two to three weeks between official semesters. During the breaks we can go visit our parents. I spent a lot of breaks with my Mother. A couple of times I got to go visit my Grandfather. I remember his Master looked so young compared to Grandpa but I knew that he was very old and he scared me. He was also very strict and demanded good manners and proper protocol at all times even from me when I was there. I was glad that I wasn’t going to be taking Grandpas place. Dad’s master didn’t like kids about so my Father would come visit me at the school when ever he could. Mother’s Mistress is very beautiful and was kind to me and she would give me candy when Mother wasn’t looking.

My friend Ted’s mother’s Mistress really didn’t like kids, but his mother got to take a vacation every year and she and Ted would get together for a couple of weeks at Christmas. I remember being jealous the year they spent at Disney World and that was one semester break that I was staying at the school.

On the other hand my class mate Doug knew early on that he was gong to be taking his grandfathers place when he turned eighteen. He would spend most of his breaks with his grandfather. So when he took his Grandfather’s place he already knew his master very well.”

Kat let Shine thought about Shine’s answer for a while. “So you don’t get the happy family with a mom and dad and two point three children and a dog and cat and hamster. Neither do a lot of people.

I think I can understand what they’re thinking. It seems like they’re not trying to be unkind with they way they treat you. I mean, it could be a whole lot worse. Look at how the slaves in this country were treated. And I’ve know kids with divorced parents who don’t get to see their moms or dads very often at all.” Kat grimaced and shrugged, “Well that was rambling. Do you understand what I was trying to say, because I’m not sure I do?”

Shine laughed quietly, “Yes, I think I understand. And I’m glad you understand.” There was a comfortable silence for a while before Shine spoke again. “I was jealous of you for your family you know.” Shine admitted. He had greatly enjoyed his holiday with Kat’s family, but a few times during the weekend he had felt like the outsider watching the close family interaction. You can’t miss something you never had but that weekend he’d had a glimpse of what he had missed being born a Servant.

Kat just smiled and pulled his lover into his lap, “No need to be jealous, you know. They liked you a lot. And they knew before I did that I’m never going to let you go, so they are your family now, too.”

Shine didn’t answer; he just snuggled closer to his lover and smiled at the knowledge that he was loved.
