Have you ever noticed how the contents of a box are much more interesting before the box is opened? At Christmas my mother used to wrap the most festive gifts for her family. She used the greatest paper and gold and silver ribbon and added small toys or bells or candy to the outside of the box. But she liked to play tricks on us too; by putting a box inside another box to make a small package bigger, or adding loose pennies in the package to make it rattle when it was picked up. One time she taped a bottle of water to one side of a box so that not only was it heavy on that side the package gurgled when it was shaken.
And shake them and them we did. She would set these packages out days early just to tantalize us. We would spend whole minutes shaking, sniffing, and thumping the gifts trying to figure out what was in them.
By the time Christmas morning came around we were dying of curiosity and would pounce on those gifts first… only to find new socks and underwear….
