Well, I finally had it with my router. It's a Linksys WRT54GS-- if any of you have bought one/are thinking of buying one that is later than v.4, beware. They went to crap. The problem is this:
All Linksys routers used to be running Linux as their operating system. For some screwy reason, which I cannot fathom, they decided it would be cool to switch to a different operation system called VxWorks, which apparently does not know how to work a router. There's irony for you. (Ask bel, I always complain about it to her). Just Google Linksys WRT54GS to see all the forums with people ranting about it.
Anyway, this operating system can't handle many connections very well. For a while the router worked fairly well, then all of a sudden for about two weeks, I had to power cycle (unplug, wait about 10 seconds, plug back in) it extremely often-- multiple times a day. With a few hours in there requiring that the thing be power cycled about every 5 minutes. Ridiculous. Anyway, after those couple weeks (approx.-- it varied depending on the router's mood), the router would suddenly decide it was going to start working again, randomly. It would work well for another couple months, then ! crap out again.
Well, within the last month or so, it got worse. For some reason the router always required to be power cycled every couple hours, sometimes more. I'd had it. So, I found this cool little operating system called
DD-WRT. Found some instructions, and flashed them onto the router, and viola! Faster download rate, and I haven't had to power cycle the router yet! Nevermind that was only about 4 hours ago...
Anyway, hopefully my router will continue to function now. And there's my rant for the day.
