The One in Which Jez Discusses FYF, NaNo, & MonAnon

Sep 15, 2009 19:48

That's a lot of acronyms.

+ FYF is my "Framing Your Future" class, which is for transfer students only. Basically it's the First Year Forum class, but for people who aren't in their first year of college, but new to Trinity. It's a 3 week course, one night a week, and it's pretty awesome. Also, they feed me. Yay.
Tonight we played a few different "games" & took a quiz on how we best learn (reading/writing for me, btw, surprised? I wasn't), but what I really found interesting was an activity we did where the teacher would read a situation and we would pick a category that we most identified with that section. The categories were "race, ethnicity, religion, class, dis/ability, & other" I tended to go between class & dis/ability in all of the sections because those two things are huge impacts on my life. "What do other people relate with you when they see you?" Class, because of my low financial standings and people really judge me for that. "What are you most proud of?" My abilities/disabilites, because I do have very many disabilities, but I overcome them and I have some good abilities that I tend to focus on to make up for the other areas. "Which area causes you the most discomfort?" Again, dis/abilities, because people treat me like a china doll when I am really not. I know my limits, let me deal with my problems, I am not a fine & precious thing*.
I think the kids in my FYF class learned more about me in 3 hours than most people learn about me in a year. Or at the very least Jen did. I love her. She picked disabilites for the discomfort one too, because she sees her height as a disability. She said that sometimes younger kids make fun of her for it, and I was like "I'm gonna hug her, no that's weird. ...I want to hug her, no that's weird. ...Oh forget it, I'm gonna hug her." And I did. :D

+ NaNoWriMo. Now I know it's not even October yet, and NaNo doesn't start til November, but I've been talking about it with Mike/@vegaobscura & Jesse/@jessays a lot today & in the past week, so I thought I'd throw it out there so you might all start thinking about joining us. Basically NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, in November. The goal of the project is to write a novel--50,000 words--in 30 days. Which sounds like a really freaking lot, but it's not so much. Not if you work at it every day. Less than 1700 a day! That's totally do-able! And while you can't start any writing yet, you CAN come up with a plot & characters. So...maybe you could do it? I'm not saying I'm going to finish (but that would be nice), I'm just going to do my best & hopefully do better than last time. Okay, I will definitely do better than last time because that was really bad. I will do better than the time before that, haha. I have to do well as to not let down the rest of the "sci-fi trifecta" as Jesse named us.

+ MonAnon. Monsters Anonymous premieres tonight! Actually, it premieres at 11 EST, which Vince tells me is 000 CDT. I'm not even sure what that stands for.
So, you've seen the promos, and if you haven't, you need to. Right now. Go here, I'll wait for you to come back. *waits* Okay. (btw, did you hear Toni & I in one of those? Because we're in one) Now, aren't you excited for the actual series? Good. And listen for me in episode 1! I play Random Person. (Pst, join Team Random Person, like Toni & Mike have. That way I can have more fans than Bob...okay, I already do.)

*Name that allusion! +1 nerdpoint up for grabs!

1. Which of those categories do you think affects your life the most? The way people perceive you? (you can answer the questions I had to answer if that helps)
2. Will you think about joining in on NaNo?
3. Are you a healthy eater or no? I try to be, anyway. Lately I certainly have been & I feel fantastic.
4. How has your transition to the new school year been going? Last week I was going positively insane & on the verge of a mental breakdown. Now I really love my school & am making friends! So yay!

I managed to finish this before driving anyone to the doctor! Yay!
