Ext. Nerdwriteria-Day...ish
A familiar sound can be heard in the distance. A sound that almost, but not quite, sounds like someone scraping a key against a piano wire. The sound becomes less and less distant at an alarming rate as a bookshelf shutters into existence.
In a way that totally makes sense, the doors of the bookshelf swing open and smoke billows out. A figure stumbles out. She's coughing and bits of her hair seem to be singed.
Toni: Hey girls, it's Thursday and I am not at all above stealing a TARDIS just to meet deadlines!
Seeing as how it's Thursday and not at all Friday, I want to wish Gaby a very happy birthday. Congrats on no longer being underage! For your present I'll let you drive the TARDIS around for a bit. You just might want to let her cool down for a bit first. Had troubles with the...polarity.
Anyway! We have a theme week this week so I wanted to talk about my top 5 character types and one I seem to absolutely loathe. Are you ready?
1. The Brain
It's pretty much a given that if a character is set up as the brain of the team I'm going to be in love. I'm a sucker for the whole clever, nerdy, awkward. One of my favorites is Donatello from ninja turtles. My cousin once gave this whole, slightly drunken rant about why Donny should be leading the turtles instead of just melting into the background as he seems to do. His argument was basically this: " The dude can build fricken robot from stuff he finds in the junkyard! He's building missiles and computers out of tin cans and stuff. The guy's a fricken genius. He should be ruling their asses." ( I would like to point out that this particular cousin builds robots himself and thus is a bit biased on the matter.)
But anyway, my point is brains= smexy. I think Wesley from Buffy(specifically the one from Buffy) is another good example of this. Even when I was supposed to hate him I couldn't completely cause he was nerdy and awkward and adorable.
2. The Heart or the comic relief
Often underrated for their talents, these characters are some of my favorites. They are fun, lovable and often times cuddly. Plus I appreciate humor. It is my personal belief that you can't really be funny without being clever in some way and I greatly appreciate cleverness. Some of my favorites are: Wash from Firefly, Michaelangelo from TMNT and Beast Boy from Teen Titans.
3. The lovable rogue
Good examples for this one include, Eugenides from The Theif (I've decided Gen is more rogue than thief because hes more rude then charming), Bartamieus from the Bartamieus trilogy and Valentine from Mirrormask. I can forgive almost anything so long as wit and charm are involved. I really am such a sucker.
5. The basket case
I love me a good crazy character. Some of the best are: River Tam, The Tick, Drusilla and The Master(of the Doctor Who variety not Buffy).
5. The gentleman thief
Very closely related to the lovable rouge. I blame this one wholly on my obsession with Gambit from when I was younger. I like the idea of thieves. The clever ones I mean. The kind that can sneak around buildings and be in abd out without ever being discovered. There's a kind of cunning involved that appeals to me much more than the straight forward toughness of your typical hero.
And now we come to the one character type that I almost consistently hate. The Leader or hero of a group.
There are of course plenty of exceptions to this. But I almost always hate the leaders of teams or groups (specifically with superheroes.) Cyclops? Tool. Leo? Lame. Robin (I'm thinking teen titans here)? Douche. Their role as a leader always seems to be the whole of their personality. And they tend to have a very black and white view of the world. Which doesn't suit me at all because gray characters are my favorite. Also Heroes have a tendency to be whiny little douchebags who bitch about everything even though they are living the awesome fantasy life you've always dreamed about. And most of the time they are bitching about something stupid like love. Really? I don't effing care if your boyfriends keep leaving you. You have super powers! No stop whining and stake the goddamned vampire already.
Oh! There wasn't really a place to put this but I wanted to say, next to Gen, Donna Noble is probably one of my all time favorite characters. Also I'm not sure where Snape really fits into all of this but I need you all to know, because it's very important, I am Snape's girl through and through. I spent countless hours defending him after Half-Blood Prince. And honestly? I will always like him more than that smug little prick James.
Comment Questions:
1. If you could have one ride in the TARDIS where/when would you go?
2. Did you support Snape?
3. What's your least favorite character types?
