The One in Which Jez Uses Her iTunes to Spy

Hey girls, it's Tuesday and I came prepared with a topic! And then I decided to wait on it because I need to figure out some of the finer details of what I'm going to say. Also it may end up on Typeset World instead. I had another idea, which was to discuss the recent book banning issue involving Speak, 20 Boy Summer, and Slaughterhouse Five, but I'm going to hold off on that until next week, which is Banned Books Week (at least here in the US).

Today when I was eating lunch in the café on campus I had my computer out and my iTunes turned on home sharing automatically, showing me other libraries available on the school's network. One of the names near the top was of a boy in half of my classes and who was in a lot of my classes last year as well. Curious, I clicked his name and had a look through his library. I don't necessarily see this as a violation of privacy because if he cared, he would have turned off home sharing. Likewise, I don't care if someone looks at what music I have in my library. Anyway, this boy has fairly decent taste in music, in my opinion, and thinking about what music he listens to gave me a slightly different perception of him. Now, I'm not saying it changed my opinion of him, it just gave me a better idea of who he is.

What I know about this boy is that he is a sophomore, he's either an English or English Education major, he reads YA but I don't know which, he has the best t-shirts, he's really quiet, he likes Where the Wild Things Are (book), and he's not a fan of poetry. Now I know that he likes bands like Metric, Regina Spektor, Spoon, The Decemberists and he really like Sufjan Stevens. This gives me a general idea of the kind of music he enjoys. I also know that he likes Harry Potter, AVPM, and he likes The Prince of Egypt enough to make it one of at most three soundtracks in his library. All in all, he's a really cool guy, more so than I thought before. In fact, I think he just ticked off a couple of my boxes for potential boyfriend, haha.

Originally, I thought you could learn more about someone based on their LastFM profile than their iTunes library, because it shows you what they are currently into, but there is so much more you can learn that doesn't have to do with music. So I got to thinking, what does my music library say about me? Well, for starters, you can tell that I'm a major audiophile who probably gets most of her music online or from friends because I have 7270 songs. I love Broadway. Some of my favorite tv shows are Grey's Anatomy and Glee. I listen to classical, rock, pop, oldies, country, Christian, rap, folk, disco, alternative...pretty much everything. From the play counts you can figure out that my favourite bands are FMStatic, Katy Perry, Regina Spektor, Seabird, and Metric. You can even see when I last listened to them, which is a little creepy. You can see that I love movies, and what kind. You can even find out what I hear like from the sound clips I have from my part on Monsters Anonymous and from when I sang a few songs for you all (including "I'm Being Toni for a Day"). You know I'm a Nerdfighter and that I like Harry Potter. Basically, there's an awful lot that my music says about me and where I fit into society and all its different subcultures.
