Stand Up!

We all know that insanely funny person who always gets everybody's attention at parties, gatherings, family reunions, etc. And I'm not talking about that creepy uncle who year after year pretends a coin's coming out of your ear. I'm talking about someone truly gifted. But what if their jokes and clever remarks were so great, more than a group of friends deserved to laugh at them? They could save their jokes for their loved ones, or they could simply... become a stand-up comedian!

Stand-up comedy started way back in the 18th century, so you can tell your hipster friend who claims he “discovered it” to shut up. Actually, you shouldn’t tell him to shut up. Maybe he’s just trying to get some laughs and maybe, one day, fulfill his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Come on, let that poor hipster dream…

I have a long list of favorite stand-up comedians and they are all very different from each other. Some of them are not afraid of speaking their mind, like Louis C.K. and Sarah Silverman. Others are so adorable you might think you’re in a Wiggles concert, when in reality, you’re just watching Demetri Martin do what he does best.

Mixing magic and comedy, Steve Martin amazed the audience with his charisma. Woody Allen shared his very peculiar view on the world, adding incredibly witty remarks. Jerry Seinfeld was a great stand-up comedian both in real life and in his hit series, “Seinfeld”.

In my opinion, you have to be at least a little bit of a narcissist to be successful at stand-up comedy. Why do I say that? Well, if you can’t listen to the sound of your own voice for an hour, an hour and a half, you can forget it! A very important characteristic every aspiring stand-up comedian should have is being able to hold the audience’s attention for decent amounts of time.

Comedy clubs are filled with future stand-up comedy stars. Of course some of them are just starting and going up the stage can be really scary the first times. After a while, they can either give up, or keep going until they get a few laughs. But, after getting more and more laughs, it can become addictive… how do I know? Well, I can only imagine, since I’m only a teenage girl who would never do something li- Wait a minute… how about… wait! Am I having an epiphany in the middle of this post? Never mind, it’s gone. I guess I ate too much jello.
