So I had my first Big Sisters thinger today. I was supposed to be matched up with a new kid, after all the Mattia drama last year, but when I got there not a damn thing was organized. It's nobody's fault, really (OK, it is, but I'm not really pissed). There's a new guy in charge of the BB/BS end, and a new principal at the school, and I'm not matched up through the school district anymore, so I don't arrive en masse with 15 others mentors. It was a clusterfuck waiting to happen.

BUT, when I got there, I met with the new principal, Dan. He asked if I had "a specific student in mind". I did a double-take, because usually they just say "mmmkay, here's your kid, have fun!" So I said I was up for anything, because after Mattia, I am.

DISCLAIMER: I love the kid. I really do. But after working with a kid who throws a kicking-and-screaming shit storm when a flock of geese won't be her friends, I AM up for anything.

Turns out, however, that Mattia is back in the program this year. Our general stance as mentors is don't ask, don't tell, so I have no clue as to why this is.

Long story short, I'll be working with her again this year. I'm excited. Beyond the fact that it's a pain in the ass to get over the I-don't-trust-new-people stage, I was a veritable mess last June when they told me she was being pulled from the program.

I didn't see her today, because her class was on a field trip to the local pumpkin patch, and the general lack of organization meant that I didn't get a phone call. But next Friday I will.

The first time I met her last year, the class was just getting back from the same field trip. Her teacher introduced me to her, but it was obvious she'd been crying and was in a pissy mood. Bonnie prompted her to say hi to me, but she looked up, stamped her foot, and said "I'm grouchy! I got bit by a MEAN OLD BUNNY RABBIT!"

(She actually had been bitten by a rabbit. Don't ask me how she pulled that off.)
