I don't want a new love -- you --

Her heart was beating normally again. It had slowed at last, but for a while it had felt prepared to burst, thundering in her chest as she sat on her bed, back to the wall, eyes firmly shut and hands clenched in fists. She wouldn't cry. Veronica Mars didn't cry ( Read more... )

To be honest, Wallace had been trying to steer clear of Veronica. He knew the moment she found out what he had found out just a day or so earlier, he'd know. Even if they never talked about it, he'd be able to see it, because, if he had learned anything in the year he had known Veronica Mars, it was how to read her face.

Her current face, for example, looked like she was condemning something to a fiery, painful death. He took it as a sign that she had been told.

"Hey," he greeted, after debating whether or not he should bother her. In the end, he figured if she wanted him to go away, she'd find a way to escape the conversation.

Veronica looked up, and it took a moment for her expression to shift at all, even when her gaze settled on her best friend. It was a hard line to walk -- she could feel too much or she could feel just one thing. She hadn't yet figured out how to not feel at all.

"Wallace." She closed her eyes for half a beat, lips pressed firm, arms folded. "This place... is crazy, huh? I can't believe it snowed."

He nodded his head. He was still dressed to be outside himself, really, as he hadn't gotten a chance to change out into less bulky clothes.

"Yeah," he agreed. "I'm wondering how long this'll last. I kinda miss the warm weather."

He paused then, considering his options, before eventually asking, "...You alright?"

"Yeah, I'm --" Veronica took a breath and offered a half-assed smile. "I'm alright. Just -- I can't -- no, I can believe, I just wish I couldn't believe that Logan... could be so selfish."

She shook her head. "Neil doesn't deserve the trouble this will cause."

Pam hadn't seen Veronica since she'd attacked her with snowballs and when she didn't see her at dinner, so she went to look for her. She went to her room and knocked gently on the door, hoping she was there.

"Veronica?"

Veronica inhaled deeply, startled by the sound of someone at the door. For a moment, she didn't respond. "Pam?" she called back. Her voice was the smallest bit shaky, she discovered to her disgust, when she raised it.

When she finally responded, Pam slowly opened the door and poked her head in. "Hey. I hope I didn't wake you up or anything.. You didn't come in during dinner, so.. Well, I wanted to check on you," she admitted, knowing full well that she sounded like a mother.

"I wasn't sleeping," Veronica said softly. She drew her other leg against her chest without looking at Pam. "Or hungry. I'm... I'm okay. Thanks, Mom." She offered a grin, but it was weak and she knew it.
