I had no concept of how much I was going to be taxed as a self-employed person. It was a lot. Nearly twice as much as Starbucks withheld from my paycheck (and if that had been my only job last year, I would have received a refund.) I suppose I should have looked into that when I got this job, or calculated my taxes a while ago. Correctly, that is. I filled out my 1040 a few months back, but just noticed the other night that I'd misread how to report my contract earnings (you can't just slap it in the "other income" box, apparently.) This led to fun with schedule Cs and SEs. I really wouldn't have been able to correct it so quickly had it not been for the Free File program, which I probably should have done to begin with.

Since I paid off my credit card I just started saving again. Last paycheck I was very proud to see my savings account grow for the first time since I've lived on my own. So much for that. I am also going to have to say goodbye to the nice bonus I unexpectedly received from work last week. I had plans to use part of it to upgrade my home recording setup with a condenser microphone and possibly a guitar amp modeler, but I suppose those dreams will have to wait. I'll just remind myself that John Darnielle recorded all of his early genius on a boombox, and that I only have a handful of unfinished songs that don't necessarily need to be recorded in high fidelity with fancy effects.

Now that I'm over the shock of how much I owe, I suppose I can chalk it up to a learning experience. My parents loaned me the money to pay the IRS, so I don't have to worry about installment plans or interest. I should be settled up by the end of the month. Then I'll only have to contend with being broke and jobless.
