In happier news, in 2018, Jeanette Eppes is going to be the first African-American astronaut aboard the International Space Station! I am chuffed beyond words for her -- I met her briefly at KC Worldcon, and she was so kind and outgoing and visibly delighted to be included in our weekend of sf madness. There could not possibly be anyone better representing us on the ISS.
