If someone sculpture a planet, which would fully reflect his photos (colors, landscapes, etc.), and offered him to name it, Rarindra would call it Farewell planet, because sooner or later we have to say goodbye to our native land, to the moments, to people and trees ... While photographing, he sees the short life of reality, sees things changing every day, or already changed. So very often he has to live in villages away from the hustle and civilization to be able to take pictures of the elusive beauty of his country in time.
Not everyone is ready to accept the changes of the XX century. This is quite normal, taking into account that the world has not completely abandoned film cameras and not fully turned to digital technology. That is the reason some people appreciate his works, and some don’t. Today, when magazines of China, Italy, Ukraine, Turkey and Iraq publish the articles about him, and photobanks sell great amount his works in Indonesia and abroad, he is quite self-confident. But what really makes him happy is that many people around the world like his works and admire them; and this is picture that is the best way to preserve disappearing Indonesian world. This is the joy of creativity.
Indonesian photography The middle of the XIX century was the beginning of the history of the Indonesian photography. Many Dutch photographers rushed to capture the events taking place in the exotic colony. Kassian Cephas was the first specialist of local origin. From 1863 to 1875he was the king’s Hamengkubuvono servant and actively shot the impetuous life of the imperial court in Yogyakarta (the first capital, before Jakarta). But brothers Frans and Alex Mendur influenced the Indonesian photographic school formation the most significantly. They founded the first photoagency IPPHOS in the country (press photo service in Indonesia) and shot a lot of the key moments of the struggle for sovereignty of Indonesia. Since 1970, photographers in Indonesia fully unlocked their potential. Salon Foto was very helpful for them; it is photofestival of a large scale, which is held every year. Such masters as Aries Liem, Agus Leonardus and Don Hasman are awarded many times here. The economic crisis of 1998 weakened photo industry very much, but by the beginning of millennium it industry got stronger, and photographers gained the opportunities for self-realization and earnings again. Today, fashion photography is headed by Darwis Triadi, and the pick of photojournalism are Kartono Riyadi, Arbain Rambey, Ed Zoelveredi and Oscar Matuloh.
