Shikamaru's eyes were swollen and red by the time Nill left to get dinner. Hours of crying and he still felt like he could go on... It seemed almost like he would never stop, only pause for short intervals because his head ached and his lungs were struggling for each breath beneath his shattered ribcage. Now he stared at the ceiling in silence, expression slack, his body broken and wrapped in casts and bandages. Useless.
His mind was a muddled series of images collected from the previous week, that short time spent with himself and those from another world, but his thoughts always returned to that final moment. How was he supposed to deal with that, watching the life vanish from his own eyes? Why hadn't he been able to protect that person who put so much trust in him to keep him safe in this world?
He had failed. He had failed himself, and now there was a world out there without him, but that might be his world and if he was... how was he supposed to get back there? Would he be able to replace the person they had lost because he failed?
