Outside of Temari's cracked window was a desolate wasteland that reminded her of the abandoned Manahattan that she had seen months ago. Of course, she had allies when she had arrived in that particular brand of hell. Here, she had seen one familiar face, and he did not recognize her at all. He thought he was a student and an intern. More importantly, he thought she was dead.

Was this what happened to terminated subjects? Were their minds wiped before being dropped into this place? And if so, what had gone wrong with her? She could remember her village, her brothers, her time in the facility . . .

Shikamaru was supposed to be coming to find her, to take her out of this pit. Whatever that meant. For now, she would stay in her room and wait, watching shapes moving through the shadows outside of her window.

Shikamaru moved cautiously down the stairs and towards that chakra signature that was so familiar. It was a small comfort in this strange new place to know that Temari was here too. Upsetting for the very same reason, but they had a better chance of figuring out what was happening working together.

He'd assumed they'd just been transferred to a different facility at first, but the more he heard the less likely that idea became. No collars at all, communicators that didn't lead to the usual network, and what seemed to be an existing population with absolutely no idea who he was or where he'd come from... except for the other him who assumed he was out to viciously murder... himself.

He called out before opening the door he assumed Temari was behind. He knew she'd be able to feel him coming, but he also knew better than to take any chances of surprising a hair-trigger shinobi in an unfamiliar situation.

"Temari?

Probably a very wise decision, since Temari was on full alert. As far as she could tell, they were in an entirely new situation. Having full access to her chakra was a small boon that she intended to maximize. Feeling Shikamaru's chakra signature at the door, coupled with the familiar voice, was an immediate relief.

"Come in, it's open." Anything that was a real threat wouldn't be stopped by a lock on a flimsy door. Temari was still standing by the window of her small, dirty room. "We're in deep this time, Shikamaru."

Shikamaru didn't bother shutting the door over, just moving quickly through it and over toward the window.

"Pulling the rug out from under us like this feels like a Consortium move, but with no collars and no one else here I'm not sure what to think."

He had all his weapons and full access to his chakra, but it'd been a long time since he'd felt this vulnerable. Not since some of those first weeks captive within the Facility

"The Consortium never removed the collars, no matter how stupid the experiment was, and it was always just the subjects. This looks like something entirely new."

Temari leaned against the window sill, looking out with him. Having all of the rules changed could leave them far more vulnerable than losing weapons or even chakra. The landscape did nothing to boost her opinions of the matter.

"Next step: information gathering or fortified location?"

"Information. We'll need to be careful, but this place is a dive and holing up won't get us anywhere... and the other me is supposed to be looking for us."

That was quite a concern all on it's own, and that concern was clear on his face. He'd been lucky enough to spend evil twin week locked in a sewer with multiple broken bones, so even if he'd had a twin he'd never made contact. Granted, this wasn't the same situation, but what person in the world came face to face (or screen to screen) with their mirror image and came away unshaken?

A twin of Dante had broken several of Temari's ribs and nearly killed her, so meeting a twin of anyone was not her idea of a good time. And this one had no idea who she was, and had hushed her on the topic of shinobi.

"Information will be interesting. Evidently, talking about the shinobi world is not allowed. It's a secret. The other you seems to think I died and that somehow my memories were scrambled. Is this what really happens when people are terminated? Their memories are wiped and they're put here?"

He raised an eyebrow, brain locking away the first bit of information quickly before focusing solely on the second possibility. That this could be where terminated subjects went was a possibility, but like always there were just too many variables. Nothing could be predicted with so much out of their control.

"If that's the case, then why do we still remember? And why am I already here? This place makes even less sense than the Facility."

"The second you is the real problem. All logic breaks down right there." Temari closed her eyes, rubbing at the bridge of her nose. "Do we even trust the other you? Considering he knows nothing about us, and didn't even recognize my name."

Her reflexive response had been trust. Back home she had considered Shikamaru an ally, and after the things they had been through, he was one of a scant handful that she could trust at her back. When she had seen that familiar face, she had trusted him. Now she was second guessing herself. It might very well be an entirely different person with the same face and name.

"He's the closest thing we have to a real source of information right now, and from the way he was talking I get the feeling he doesn't want to be here, wherever this is, any longer than he has to. We just have to stick together, stay alert, and make sure he tells us what we need to know."

He didn't want to say that he could tell the other him wasn't lying, because he couldn't do so honestly, but... it was him. Shikamaru knew himself and what he looked and sounded like when he lied, and it was a fight to not automatically assume certain things about them would be the same.

"Well, if he's anything like me at all then you can probably kick his ass." A pathetic attempt at humor, but an attempt nonetheless.

It earned him a snort from the woman, green eyes opening again. "If he's a student and a paper pusher like he says he is? He'll be even easier than you."

There wasn't really much of a choice. It was either the double they might know something about, or a city full of complete strangers where they didn't even have that chance. "What we need to know is how to get out, but I doubt he'll have that information. Or even understand the question."

Were they ever going to make it back to their villages?

"Student?" Shikamaru hadn't gotten very much from his double on a personal level, but that wasn't particularly surprising. A student who insisted on hushing any talk of the shinobi world? More questions to ask about this new world and the people in it, but none of them as important as the one that they were the least likely to get an answer for.

"... We'll have to take things just as we did in the Facility. Gather what information we can and go from there. There's no other way to go about it."

Months of training with Itachi in Abyss had given him familiarity with some of Abyss's layout but the place was massive and knowing the terrain didn't help prepare him for who he might encounter. He'd at least gained some street smarts over the past year. Knew to dress like a hobo and avoid eye contact while clutching a knife in his pocket. He still wanted to get out as fast as possible, before it got even close to sunset. It was lucky he'd gotten an early start.

He was fairly sure he knew what hotel Temari was hiding out at, and the closer he got the surer he felt. He let his intuition do the leading, the way Itachi had taught him, and that brought him to a certain room. He stopped just to the side of it, listened for a few seconds to the muffled voices inside, then stepped into the open doorway.

"Student and intern was what he told me. But he slouches the same way you do." It was strange. In some ways they were identical, but in others, they were different people.

"As odd as it sounds, I think I prefer the Facility. This place may be more open, but I think we're in more danger here." Temari turned to look to the open door and the room's new occupant, nothing in her posture changing, but her eyes sharpening. "Don't you think, Shikamaru? You know this is going to get confusing very fast."

... Well, this was different. Far stranger than seeing this double through the communicator. At least with that distance before there was still room for denial, as well as the very small comfort it provided.

But not anymore.

"At least we don't have to bother with formal introductions." He turned to face his other self, looking him up and down. Clothing aside they were virtually the same, right down the current inability to slip back into what would normally be a slouching, relaxed posture.
