Was this what happened to terminated subjects? Were their minds wiped before being dropped into this place? And if so, what had gone wrong with her? She could remember her village, her brothers, her time in the facility . . .
Shikamaru was supposed to be coming to find her, to take her out of this pit. Whatever that meant. For now, she would stay in her room and wait, watching shapes moving through the shadows outside of her window.

He'd assumed they'd just been transferred to a different facility at first, but the more he heard the less likely that idea became. No collars at all, communicators that didn't lead to the usual network, and what seemed to be an existing population with absolutely no idea who he was or where he'd come from... except for the other him who assumed he was out to viciously murder... himself.
He called out before opening the door he assumed Temari was behind. He knew she'd be able to feel him coming, but he also knew better than to take any chances of surprising a hair-trigger shinobi in an unfamiliar situation.
"Temari?

"Come in, it's open." Anything that was a real threat wouldn't be stopped by a lock on a flimsy door. Temari was still standing by the window of her small, dirty room. "We're in deep this time, Shikamaru."

"Pulling the rug out from under us like this feels like a Consortium move, but with no collars and no one else here I'm not sure what to think."
He had all his weapons and full access to his chakra, but it'd been a long time since he'd felt this vulnerable. Not since some of those first weeks captive within the Facility

Temari leaned against the window sill, looking out with him. Having all of the rules changed could leave them far more vulnerable than losing weapons or even chakra. The landscape did nothing to boost her opinions of the matter.
"Next step: information gathering or fortified location?"

That was quite a concern all on it's own, and that concern was clear on his face. He'd been lucky enough to spend evil twin week locked in a sewer with multiple broken bones, so even if he'd had a twin he'd never made contact. Granted, this wasn't the same situation, but what person in the world came face to face (or screen to screen) with their mirror image and came away unshaken?

"Information will be interesting. Evidently, talking about the shinobi world is not allowed. It's a secret. The other you seems to think I died and that somehow my memories were scrambled. Is this what really happens when people are terminated? Their memories are wiped and they're put here?"
Reply
"If that's the case, then why do we still remember? And why am I already here? This place makes even less sense than the Facility."

Her reflexive response had been trust. Back home she had considered Shikamaru an ally, and after the things they had been through, he was one of a scant handful that she could trust at her back. When she had seen that familiar face, she had trusted him. Now she was second guessing herself. It might very well be an entirely different person with the same face and name.

He didn't want to say that he could tell the other him wasn't lying, because he couldn't do so honestly, but... it was him. Shikamaru knew himself and what he looked and sounded like when he lied, and it was a fight to not automatically assume certain things about them would be the same.
"Well, if he's anything like me at all then you can probably kick his ass." A pathetic attempt at humor, but an attempt nonetheless.

There wasn't really much of a choice. It was either the double they might know something about, or a city full of complete strangers where they didn't even have that chance. "What we need to know is how to get out, but I doubt he'll have that information. Or even understand the question."
Were they ever going to make it back to their villages?

"... We'll have to take things just as we did in the Facility. Gather what information we can and go from there. There's no other way to go about it."

He was fairly sure he knew what hotel Temari was hiding out at, and the closer he got the surer he felt. He let his intuition do the leading, the way Itachi had taught him, and that brought him to a certain room. He stopped just to the side of it, listened for a few seconds to the muffled voices inside, then stepped into the open doorway.

"As odd as it sounds, I think I prefer the Facility. This place may be more open, but I think we're in more danger here." Temari turned to look to the open door and the room's new occupant, nothing in her posture changing, but her eyes sharpening. "Don't you think, Shikamaru? You know this is going to get confusing very fast."
Reply
But not anymore.
"At least we don't have to bother with formal introductions." He turned to face his other self, looking him up and down. Clothing aside they were virtually the same, right down the current inability to slip back into what would normally be a slouching, relaxed posture.
