Shikamaru didn't exactly walk to school anymore. Since his fight with Yosuke, he'd started using the journey to train instead. Itachi had taught him all kinds of things in the short time since he'd taken on Shikamaru as a student, but Shikamaru had to use his own free time to practice those things. Today... walking up buildings and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. The fog provided the perfect cover. No one would notice what he was doing even in the daylight.

And that's why he was the first one to notice the body hanging from an antenna on top of an old brownstone.

He didn't even register what he'd seen until he passed it, and then he had to backtrack. Because it couldn't be what he'd thought it was. Twisted limbs and long blonde hair, like something from his nightmares. No. He was imagining it, he--

He landed on the slick roof. The body was facing away from him, but there was no mistaking it. It was definitely a corpse, hung upside-down like it was a mockery of Roman crucifixion. Shikamaru almost reached out to move it, to turn it so he could see the victim's face, but the thought struck him that the placement might be important to the investigation. So he whipped out his cell phone and took a picture. And even with that done, he didn't disturb the body. He walked slowly to the other side of the roof instead.

"No--"

He lost his concentration, lost his footing, nearly fell backwards off the roof before he caught himself, on hands and knees. His hands were shaking.

"Deidara..."

Maybe he was still alive! Shikamaru pushed himself up and ran up to the antenna. His stomach turned, seeing everything this close. Who was he kidding, still alive? But he reached out anyway to hold Deidara's cheeks, looking into the empty eyes of that suspended corpse. He was so cold.

"No," he mumbled to Deidara. "No, you're not... Come on, man. We don't run off and die alone. That's not how this works!" He couldn't see Deidara's face anymore; his vision blurred into tears. "Why didn't you call? Why... We would've come, we would've helped you..."

Deidara wasn't answering.

Shikamaru took several deep breaths. If he fainted now, he'd just fall off the roof and die too. Then what would happen to Hidan?

Hidan.

He pulled out his phone again, dialing Hidan's cell. The idiot was probably still asleep at home. Unless he was dead too. Don't be stupid, he snapped at himself. He can't die. But what did this arrangement of the body mean? Was someone out there still holding a grudge against muties? Had someone found out about Deidara? Was it the military? The police? It wasn't out of the question. That's why... Hidan needed to get here first, for backup. Then he'd call the police.

Then he'd catch the son of a bitch who did this and make him pay.
