I've realized over the past year or so that I'm actually really interested in event planning. I'm kind of considering going and trying to be an intern for an event planner or a wedding planner after the summer is over. I know that I don't want to do this for my career, but I wouldn't mind being part of it and learning some tricks of the trade. The process of anticipating the needs of guests, decorating, managing behind the scenes, putting everything together, etc. sounds exciting to me. I've enjoyed the few times that I've been on an event production team, and I want to see if I would enjoy it on a larger/more serious scale.
Events that I have helped to put on include:
Decorations for two different masquerade dances
Decorations for Phoebe's Halloween party
Day-of management for wedding
Overall management of my liquid latex dance and independent study performance
General support for 40th anniversary conference for non-profit
(I would always try to event-plan my birthdays when I was younger and was sorely disappointed each year when my carefully-laid plans did not lead to the general enjoyment of my guests. Adhering to a schedule of activities that doesn't include "just hang out" as its primary focus isn't really the standard middle-schooler's idea of a birthday party.)
I think that I would prefer wedding planning over general event planning because decoration and the creation of a theme/ambiance play more of a role. Also, I like weddings. However, I have no idea if wedding planners need interns/assistants, and I would be surprised if there were any paid positions available that I would be qualified for. I don't even know if I'm qualified for an unpaid position.
Anyway, deep down inside me, I really want to re-found the More Than Music summer camp that I went to when I was younger, which would be a massive undertaking (especially considering that it's now been several years since the camp last existed), and I would need all of the event planning skills ever to make that happen. So, why not start now?
