Friday February 1st, 2008, for the first time in the history of Yellowknife, schools will be closed due to weather... it is currently a balmy -50°C (That's -57°F for you Americans) and there's a fog so thick outside that I can't see the end of my driveway. At -30°C (-22°F) it gets too cold to snow, at -40°C (-40°F), it becomes too cold to walk to work, even in parkas and snow pants, at -50°C, Bush makes an intelligent speech that not once mentions "war on terror" or "9-11" and has a positive impact on the American people and improves their quality of life....cause you know, hell's frozen over. The reason that SOME of the schools are closed is not that they think it's too cold to get to school...oh no, it's because the bus company knows that they will not be able to get the busses started to get all the kids to school, so they are not running the school busses tomorrow, and only running half the city busses, which is how I get to work every morning. Now, if you'll notice I said "SOME" of the schools are closed. The Catholic school system (aka, the system TheKid is in), is NOT closing it's doors, and is instead leaving it up to the parents to decide whether or not to get the kids to school. This just goes to show how the catholic school system's penitent for tormenting kids has not changed. This is something of a disappointment to TheKid. The first "bad weather day" in the frozen knife, and she still has to go to school! I have to say, when I was a kid they still made us go outside to play when it got this cold. I remember one winter where it was -70°C (that's -HOLY FUCK°F) and we were still made to go outside to play. We didn't stay out long because someone inside the school actually bothered to check the weather channel and say "Hey, we could have a lot of pissed off parents on our back if the kids start dropping fingers and/or noses here...that and it's hard to give digitless kids pop-quizzes". Good lord, I just realized I'm 26 and I just gave a "in my day, things were much worse" speech....MOVING ON!
You know in the last post where I said "I love my friends, but none of them are good for a game of Settlers of Catan"....yeah apparently I lied. I'm now going to a regular night of Settlers every weekend. It makes me wonder if my lovely friend "Lollypop Dynamite" (no not her real name...it's long story that I'll tell later), is reading this blog. She is on my friend's list, so I'm thinking she may have read that little tidbit and decided that to prove me wrong. If you are reading this Lollypop... DAMN YOU FOR PROVING ME WRONG!!! Nah, in all seriousness, I am quite enjoying the game nights, and when I get the house fixed up, I plan on having them on a regular basis.
Oh yeah, did I mention? I'm keeping the house. The(ex)Hubby and I had a conversation about what's to happen in the future, and one suggestion he made was that I keep the place. He mentioned that it may cost me less to keep this place on my own, than to rent somewhere, and that it would mean TheKid still had a place here with all her stuff, and would not have to change her whole life around. There are other factors that I'm not going to mention here, as I'm not sure how solid plans are right now, but we went in and re-signed the mortgage, and for about $460 off each paycheque, I have a house to myself. I've offered to keep his stuff here that he can't find room for (I'll be using some of it anyways, such as the board games). I've taken to wandering around the place saying to myself "Ooooo, I think I'd like to have THIS ripped out and put in THIS instead!". I've said that I want the place fixed up and his stuff that I'm keeping and not using should be packed up so I can store it properly, and not just having it laying around where it could get wreaked. Hopefully things will work out for both of us.
Also, speaking of making life changes, I'm going to the gym every day at lunch. I go for about 30min, do mostly cardiovascular stuff, shower there, and go back to work. You have no idea how awesome showering in the middle of the day can be. The work outs have also given me a great energy boost. I'm actually making new and yummier meals, instead of the same old same old. I have energy to walk home after work instead of barely having the energy to get my ass to the bus on time. It's also a great anti-depressant, which is needed some days. The reason I started going is because I do a lot of sitting on my ass in every day life, and I got tired of feeling so damn lazy. I'd like to get myself to a point where I can go on long hikes and long skis jaunts in winter.
Anywho, I think that's all that I have time to update on. There are some good stories, and all the knitty crafty stuff I could mention, but I'll leave that for another time, as I have to get to bed now. Hope frostbite is not a factor in your future where you are!
