2008, Year of the Fist
In my last entry I said 2008 was the best year ever for fighting games. I wanted something more concrete so I made a shortlist of fighting games from last year;

Final Fantasy Dissidia
King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match
King of Fighters XII (in development)
Melty Blood Actress Again
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
Soul Calibur IV
Street Fighter II HD Remix
Street Fighter IV
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion
...and those are just the biggest or most interesting names. There's probably a dozen or so more obscure Japanese fighters on top of that but I think the list stands as it is. I see this as a record that won't be beaten for a long, long time.
