Al felt it took him too long to sit down on that chair. He really resented the sorting ceremony taking place in front of everyone, all the older students. Couldn't they do this in private and just announce the newcomers to each house at once? That way you would already know what was coming. If he was going to go to Slytherin, he would at least like to know first. This was unfair and he wished he was home with Lily, playing a relaxing game of Exploding Snap and making up stories about what James was up to like they did last year, when Neville was putting the hat on his head with a small smile. Suddenly he heard a voice in his head.

I didn't say that.

It took Al a second to realize the hat was talking to him. He was trying to think back at it, his eyes rolled up so far it almost hurt.

Didn't say what?

I didn't say I you go to Slytherin.

No? I'm a Gryffindor?

I didn't say that.

You're putting me in Hufflepuff?

I ... child! Are we playing a guessing game?

You're putting me in Slytherin, aren't you?

Is that what you want? I could see you do great things...

My brother will make fun of me so hard!

That shouldn't influence, er, my decision.

I'm brave!

I see...

So's of course, Severus, er, you know, Snape, right?

The sorting hat did not answer.

My whole family are Gryffindors!

Yes.

But I don't have to be just like them!

No!

If I'm in Slytherin, then so what? I can still be better than James!

Hm.

And I'm not suddenly some kind of dark wizard!

Mm.

My parents fought dark wizards and so would I! I will learn everything and if I ever meet a dark wizard he is going to wish... he is going to wish I was my father instead, because I will, erm, I will even be worse for him!

I see...

I'm brave enough to be in Gryffindor, I swear! Not that you have to be a Gryf...

Get off my chair, boy!

"SLYTHERIN" the hat cried out loud.

Al was shocked. It really happened. Why him? He looked up, because Neville had put a hand on his shoulder and gently nudged him forward, already holding the traitorous hat in his hand. Al realized that the students at the Slytherin table were clapping and cheering for a while now. Well, that's nice. He made his way there as dignified as he could, although he felt tears ready to well up in him.

Life could be so easy, he could go and sit on the other side with his cousins and brother, who would be so proud of him and tell him that he has done well. He hasn't done well, has he? Hopefully he could avoid looking in the direction of any Gryffindors or relatives for the remainder of his school life.

He sat down at the end of the table with all the first years, and the clapping finally died down. The boy next to him was saying something and smiling.

"What?"

"I said, this is quite a surprise, isn't it?"

Al didn't like the tone of the boy's voice. He was probably mocking him.

"No, why?" he said and felt himself regaining his composure. "Nobody knows where they'll get sorted into anyway, right?"

"I knew I was going to be in Slytherin. It's the best house!"

That boy was sounding annoyingly full of himself and almost certainly lying. How could he have known?

"The Death Eater house." Al said darkly.

"Well, Death Eaters were some of the best wizards, weren't they? That's why Voldemort was recruiting them in the first place, right? What would you do if you were a dark lord?"

Finally the boy had dropped his haughty voice.

"Still, they lost, so. And they were wrong."

"They were misguided, yeah." the boy said, making an indefinite gesture with his left hand.

Al's head swirled around to the high table. If he heard right... yes ... It was Rose's turn. His favorite cousin could be his salvation.

Please, not Gryffindor! Please, not Gryffindor! He hardly dared to hope she would come to Slytherin as well.

"GRYFFINDOR" shouted the hat way too soon and Al's last hope was crushed.

Rose jumped down from the chair and smiled at Al, which gave him a stab to the heart, before all but running to the Gryffindor table. Al followed her with his eyes. He wanted to cry again when he saw Lucy get up and give her a hug. When his eyes fell on James clapping with his hands over his head and smiling broadly, he quickly looked away.

"You were with her at King's Cross."

"Yeah, she's my cousin." Al fiddled with the cutlery in front of him. "So you're ... Scorpius?" He was glad he remembered and could change the subject.

"Yes, pleased to meet you."

"I'm Al." Al added quickly. He was going to make sure people at school wouldn't fall in the habit of calling him Albus. He could still make the best of his doom.
