Remember the
One and Other project in London I mentioned?
The current guy. Yet again specifically wanted in this thing, and is spending his time up there talking into his cellphone. This is one of the biggest art installations with a steadily growing world viewership England's ever had, and easily, more than a third of the participants are spending it talking on cellphones. Why?
Speaking of Antony Gormley in specific, but his work in general, the page on the project itself says "One & Other is an extension of the exploration of the connection between individuals. The volunteers on the plinth become both representations of themselves and of the human population of the world, viewed by fellow members of the wider society which they inhabit."
So...if the Everyman (or Everywoman) on the plinth would rather spend their hour talking on their cellphone than interacting, does that speak to the larger issue of world disconnection? Does that speak to how many of us have chosen net communication, cell communication, anything that doesn't involve sitting face to face with another human being?
Does that worry anyone else but me?
