I don't understand what's wrong with dandelions. I'm seeing commercial after commercial in my area about the hazards of dandelions, and I just don't get it. Dandelions
( Read more... )
People dislike dandilions because they disrupt the uniform look of a lawn and can be pokey. I like dandilions, mostly because i enjoy infecting the neighbor's lawn with them. Also, there are many herbal uses, mostly for the root part. Tea can be made with all the parts as well.
You know, I forgot about that. Plus there's a slight caustic nature to the dandelion 'milk', and if you have a cut or scrape, you can drip the 'milk' onto the wound and it will slow bleeding in a pinch.
Dandelions=very useful. But then, I don't get using pesticides anyway--here, let's throw some systemic poison onto the plants and soil, and then water religiously, so we can then drink the systemic poison and mutate! Yay, go us!
However, as the owner of a lawn that was just laid last year (brand new house), I am aware that it is likely that it was sprayed at some point in its life. But since it is presently dandilion free, I am attempting to keep it that way by pulling them out.
I agree that they have many useful properties, but they also get into my gardens (veggie and ornamental) and I don't want my cherished plants to have competition with interlopers. And you know that if I let them get a foothold in the lawn, they will get into the garden beds as well. :-(
True, but remember their aerodynamic seeding properties--if you don't have any, and someone half a block away does, you'll still get them.
I tend to plant dandelions in windowboxes, see, when I have the space. And I've been known to scatter wildflower seeds in vacant lots and by highways. So maybe I'm just a little crazed on the topic. :)

Y'know, that's a more apt description than you think. I'm not overwhelmingly huge on what's fad at the moment. I'm either still responsive to the fads of two decades back, or I'm off doing something nobody can figure out. :)
