My senior year and the summer after, I spent a lot of time at my friend Davids house. I was there after his brother died, I was there when his mom was sick. It was practically my second home. Years later, when chatting up a police officer in town, he jokingly mentioned that he ran my plates dozens of times before he finally started remembering my little blue Toyota. It wasn't always the best part of town and it was around the corner from our lone liquor store. I was surprised he ran my plates, but didn't think much of it. That officer was always the one who knew peoples names and seemed to be checking up on you just when you were thinking about breaking the law. I never begrudged him that. I always just knew he was doing his job.
Tonight on the news there is some hubabulub about these new licence plate scanners on police cars. There is a group saying it is an invasion of privacy. The officer interviewed stated the same argument I immediately thought, its information they already have access to,just faster.
Point? I don't really have one. I know this is one of those fine line issues like homeland security having access to our library check out history. It seems innocuous but a more devious person than me could turn it to tyranny. I am annoyed by my classes making me more politically aware. Opinions?
