Title: The Consequences of Dreams
Author: nekusagi
Rating: G
Verse: Anime
Characters: Delia/Giovanni
Summary: Delia and Giovanni thought they knew where their future would take them. But dreams are never as easy as they look when they come into the real world.
Notes: This is my first time trying this! I tried doing what I could with what came up (and had to switch songs once- I Want A New Duck probably is not appropriate for this pairing). I've not written this much at once in a long time, or ever posted fics on LJ, so please give me feedback if possible! :3

Bigger Than my Body- John Mayer

They were just two people with dreams, when it came down to it. Two people who loved each other and wanted to make it in the world. Even if it seemed like they couldn't. She was just a quiet girl with only a few friends. He was a sheltered heir.

He opened the picnic basket, pulled out a chocolate cake and a thermos of chilled lemonade.

But they knew to hold on to dreams. Dreams were all they had. The poor city girl and the rich boy who loved each other.

She ate some cake there, under the tree, laughed at a joke he told.

Life was quiet escapes together. Mundane things. They treasured these moments, treasured the little times they could spend together, knowing well what adulthood would bring them, what responsibilities awaited them in a matter of years.

He poured her some more lemonade, the taste perfecty sweet and sour and the drink as brillant as the sun setting around them.

The responsibilities seemed intimidating, in a way, but at the same time, they both felt a thrill, knowing the possibilities that were so within their grasp. Knowing that they could turn what was waiting for them into something great, start a family, perhaps even change the world in their own way.

She rested her head on his lap, and closed her eyes.

Two people, who could be inconsequential. But she had the charm, and he had the connections,  the power. Everything they were waiting for could come to them, so easily. All they needed were each other, and their dreams. Real life worries could wait for now. They knew they were there, but they saw no point in dwelling on them. Not as long as they had this perfect, sweet moment.

His Persian nuzzled her hand, as he brushed her bangs out of her face lovingly.

This moment, when they were merely two hopelessly in love. As close as they could be, savoring these moments between each other. The moments that would cement their lives together, their destiny together. The moments that would ultimately lead them to happiness.

They stayed there in that embrace, watching the orange sun slowly sink into the horizon.

They'd be bigger one day. And better. They had each other. They were each all they needed to get where they wanted in life.

Anywhere- Evanescence

The scene started innocuously enough. Delia and Giovanni in a Celadon City cafe, discussing life over hot tea. Not an uncommon occurence in the small cafe, their quiet escape from prying eyes and journalists wanting yet another exclusive on Kanto's favorite heir.

Delia giggled over a bit of gossip she'd picked up, forcing the words between her laughter. "And then.. then I said... well THAT'S no Oddish!"

Her companion forced out a polite laugh, then returned to his Earl Grey, staring into the teacup between each sip. Delia's grin turned into a look of deep concern. When Giovanni got like this, it was usually something pretty serious.

"...Gio? Is something wrong?" she asked him. He continued staring into his teacup, barely looking at her.

"I have an idea.... something I want to do," he said.

"You can share it, then," Delia said. "If you're this deep in thought, it must be more important than whatever I was just rambling about."

He stayed quiet for a moment or two, then swallowed his pride. No point delaying it any further.

"Let's run away, Delia," he said, out of nowhere.

Delia waited a bit before speaking again, letting it sink in.

"...what?"

"I said, let's run away," Giovanni replied. "We can't keep just meeting like this, in secret, forced to hide who we really are. The big newspapers, in Viridian, Saffron, here, they're ruthless. They'll do anything for a scoop on me. And you- it's no secret, all the gossip is about you. Because you stepped out of line. You did what good girls don't do and dated a man wealthier than you."

"Isn't that a bit.. drastic?" Delia asked, secretly intrigued by the idea, but her quieter side choking the urge out.

"We have nothing to lose, Delia. I own a summer home in Pallet Town, near Samuel Oak's laboratory. We can move in together there, start a life together, I can even pull some strings and get you an education by Oak himself." He finished his cup of tea, laid it on the saucer. "You know as well as I do your future's not here. Not as long as we have to deal with disapproval from both sides."

He reached across the table and took Delia's hands in his.

"This is our destiny, Delia. Will you take it, or let it pass you by?"

Delia searched for the right words. He was right. His mother disapproved, her parents disapproved... they had to move out, and start a life of their own.

"Giovanni, I...."

"Yes or no, Delia. It's simple. We'll meet at the bus stop at sunrise, and we'll take the first bus out to Pallet. To our new life."

Delia looked into his eyes.

"Yes," she said. Destiny sounded like an exciting thing to her.

I Wonder (Departure)-ABBA

Delia stared out the window of the bus stop. Anytime, he'd be there to pick her up...

Celadon City was where she grew up. Her home. She never thought she'd live anywhere but there. And yet, here she was, about to start a new life, with the one she loved.

There were so many memories here. Every little milestone in her life, she'd had it here. First bike ride, first love, first broken heart... She would be leaving so much behind. So much of her past. Celadon City was her comfort zone. It was the place she felt most herself, the place she truly felt she belonged. And she was going to... Pallet Town? The only thing she knew about it was that it was that place near where Oak lived, and there might be the option of studying with him...

She didn't know what it'd be like when she came back. If she ever would. So much would have changed.. so much in her little comfort zone...

She nervously fumbled at her luggage. She was afraid to admit it, but this was a little bit scary to her. Frightening was probably the better word. It was no secret their love was looked down upon by most outside. What was that rich boy doing with that girl next door from Celadon, anyway? More importantly, what was a girl like her doing with that rich boy anyway? She'd heard the gossip, alleging her of being a gold digger, or worse... the words questioning her intentions, marrying into one of Kanto's most powerful families...

For a moment, she entertained thoughts of turning back. Of just telling him that she couldn't do it, couldn't bring herself to leave, not now. She could stay in Celadon, wait for his mother to pass, then move in under less scrutiny.. she could throw it all away and start over.

Even in her nervousness, it was too extreme for her. Delia was never one to turn back on a promise. She was never one to turn back on someone she loved. She had the chance of a lifetime before her. The chance to be with her true love, the chance to study under one of the most respected teachers out there, the chance to maybe even start a family.

To turn this down now meant turning down the life waiting for her. Turning down her destiny, even. She felt like she finally had a grasp of what he meant when he discussed destiny with her. For the longest time she passed it off as impassioned ramblings by a man determined to restore honor to his family name and inspire passion in the small band that followed him within his mother's organization, but she was finally beginning to understand the concept.

Her destiny was in Pallet Town. Her destiny was beyond the big city, in the quiet countryside. It seemed such a strange inversion of the typical dream of making it in the big city, and in a way it intrigued her.

"Delia? Are you ready to go?"

Delia heard a familiar voice nearby. She snapped out of her dreaming to see Giovanni, with his bags and Persian at his side, standing near the ticket booth with their tickets.

"Yes," she said, confident. It couldn't go wrong.

 Blurry Eyes- L'arc en Ciel

She missed him.

It'd been three years since he had left to take over for his mother, and despite the occasional secretive phone calls, a huge part of her life felt like it was missing. Delia knew his absence was for the family's own good, to protect her, to protect Ash... it didn't make it hurt any less. If anything knowing the boy's existence put them all at danger made her feel guilt at times, feel as though having Ash was the biggest mistake she'd ever made. Separated from her love, and a boy growing up without his father.

Giovanni promised reunion when Ash turned 18, he promised they could return to normal. But what was normal, Delia wondered? Was anything ever "normal" for them? Normal was a tall order when dating the richest, most powerful man in Kanto and secret head of an underground organization. Normal was a tall order when the two eloped. Normal was something Delia never knew.

Delia gazed into the photo of Giovanni by her bedside. The one hastily shoved into the side table when Ash and his friends paid her a visit. The one she had to keep hidden when company came over, lest uncomfortable questions be asked.

It felt like the only thing keeping her going some days. The only thing reminding her of the one said to love her.

Did he feel the same, she wondered? Did he ever sit, waiting for the day he could no longer hide his true feelings from the world? Or was he swept away in the paperwork, the intrigue, the life that was surely more exciting than domestic life in Pallet Town?

She knew deep inside he missed her. The letters, in unmarked envelopes, the calls at late hours when he was the only one at HQ... she knew he wouldn't stray.

Her subconcious teased her with the nightmares though, of secretaries and secret affairs. And late at night it was easier to believe screaming nightmares than what her heart whispered.

Some days she'd wished things were different for them. That he would have broken away from family obligations, disbanded Team Rocket, and settled down with a family. She wondered if it was really family honor calling him to pick up his mother's station, or simply the longing for money and power that came with it. Was that worth separating himself from his true love, his son, his life before his mother died?

The years would go by so slowly before they could reunite. Painfully so. Winter would turn to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall, and winter's chill again. All without him at her side, constantly.

She turned her head to the window. Her eyes welled up with tears. One more day, she would tell herself. Every day. Every day she was closer to being with him again, she'd remind herself.

But the seasons wouldn't stop.

It's A Hard Life- Queen

It had been a long day.

Giovanni had been steadily working his way through a massive stack of paperwork, the result of a new base that was set to begin construction within the week. He hated bureaucracy and all the trappings of it, the endless red tape.

Having to come up with cool stories to share with the authorities where the building would take place didn't help. In this case, a nonprofit was the cover. A decision that would cast him in a positive light in the media, yes, and surely add yet another layer of fresh snow to his proverbial tracks, but at the same time, he hadn't anticipated the massive mess of signatures and forms and calculations it would entail.

When he was a boy, he thought this work would be glamourous. Exciting. He had visions of taking to the field, commanding whole missions, living a life of adventure and intrigue like the spy movies he watched.

Instead it was... this. Quite a disappointment, really. He felt chained to his desk some days, like there was no escape.

Giovanni put one more signature on the bottom of a form, then sank back in his chair, hoping to sneak in a nap.

A knock on the door.

"Oh, what in the name of Giratina's alternate dimension- come in," he said, his voice going from irriated to a forced friendliness in a few seconds.

Wendy.

This was not a good sign of things to come.

"Sir, how closely were you paying attention to these forms?"

"I double, triple checked them. Why?"

"You put the wrong numbers in these columns," she said, laying down a thick, paperclipped stack of forms. "On all of these."

Giovanni buried his face in his hands and moaned a little.

"Oh no, sir, don't worry! I was up all night last night photocopying everything for you! I'll be right back with the replacements!" Wendy's typical mock-cheerful voice grated at his ears and increased his mental fatigue. He moaned again, this time higher pitched and sounding a bit like an injured Rattata.

Wendy scurried out the door to fetch the papers. There was little that could lift him up now...

Unless...

Yes, it was most certainly safe. He reached into the secret drawer of his desk, and pulled out the thing that would save him now.

A picture of him with Delia, on their honeymoon. It reminded him why he was there- he made a promise. To Delia. To his son, whom he had yet to meet. This was why he was doing this. To keep them safe, happy. To be the best he could for them.

He couldn't let Delia down. He couldn't let the boy down. He was never one to back down on promises, and he wasn't going to start now.

Giovanni smiled, and he felt the hours of drudgery at the desk melt away from him. In the end this would all be worth it.

He threw his nearly dead pen in the trash and took a new one out of the pack, ready to begin again.

Wendy returned. "Here's those forms,' she said.

"Thanks, Wendy," he replied. "Have a nice day."

Wendy glanced at him, wondering for a moment what possibly could have inspired him to steal her typical catch phrase, then left.

It must have taken something truly special to make him feel that kind of cheer.
