Personally, I don't drink all that much, I've never smoked, and I'll never do drugs.  It's just not my thing at all.  Life is complex and exciting enough for me without having to supplement it, not to mention that pursuing these things is expensive and not exactly good for you.  Also I get fucked up just from taking a regular dose of cough syrup when I have a cold, so these things are probably 1000 times worse for me.  So my personal opinion is anything more then casual drinking is a waste, cigarettes are RETARDED, and other drugs really have no place in my life.

I think one of my biggest problems with these things is... when people get addicted to using substances to alter their lives, they sort of change themselves into different people.  Everyone I know who has gone through this...  well, we had to stop being friends after awhile.  They started to act like life is not worth living if you're not on something.  Parties can't be fun if you're not drunk.  Things can't be funny if you're not high.  People aren't worth hanging out with if you're not allowed to smoke.  And after awhile all they want to do is lay around and be altered all the time.  When did sitting and doing nothing start being fun?

Smoking alone drives me nuts  I dated a guy that smoked, he used to get so pissed at me when I wouldn't let him smoke around me because I was apparently "punishing him".  So sorry, I don't think you should punish me with bad lungs just because you made bad choices.  I also have made a few enemies around CSUF because I've told people off for smoking in smoke-free areas.  One time this guy was smoking under a "NO SMOKING WITHIN 20 FEET OF THIS AREA" sign.  ASSHOLE, CAN YOU NOT READ?  You're standing under a freaking vent that pumps air into that building you're leaning against, can you have some consideration for the entire science department, please?

Really I don't like hanging out with people who get like this.  However, do I think that people shouldn't ever do these things?  No, that's their choices.  Do I think it's stupid to get wasted or smoke a pack of cigarettes?  Yes.  But if that's what people want to do, that's their prerogative.  As long as they don't try to force it on me, or berate me for not doing it, they're welcome to do it.  And if they do become an ass about it... well we're not going to hang out anymore.  But if they ever ask me what I think, I'm going to be honest about it.

I think it's unhealthy and a waste of time and money, and people who abuse these substances can easily find other ways to spend their time.

Although I will acknowledge that drugs have helped bring into the world some of my favorite music.  However, those artists used their altered state to create something, rather then just sitting around doing nothing.  I'm not saying what they did was right, but I'm not going to say that they were assholes about it.  But in the end a lot of these artists met bad ends... so maybe that was the trade off.  I don't know.
