Next week we start doing test prep work in my class. It involves a lot of timed tests, and all the studies show that you should make books available for students to read after they finish their test. My master teacher has a few age appropriate books, but my students have them pretty well picked over, so I'm bringing in "Miss Miller's Basket of Books" next week. Went through my books, pulled out a ton of age appropriate books and graphic novels, and put them in a basket. I'm nervous about letting the students read them, but again, studies show that if you trust the kids with books, they will return them 99% of the time. And if they don't.... well I can't really get mad about a student not wanting to return a book if it means they're reading it.
Though I'm still working on a check-out system just to be sure XD
Yesterday Dan and I started "Operation: Find a Goddamn Suit." For my birthday, my friends are throwing another Murder Mystery party and the theme is fictional characters, so we all applied for some characters and were assigned one. I got Artemis Fowl II, Dan got the 10th Doctor. SO NOW WE BOTH NEED TO FIND SUITS. Dan needs some pinstripe nonsense, I just need something clean cut that fits me like a dude. Dan had some luck, we found two blazers but no pants. I'm not having as much luck because the suits that end up in thrift stores tend to be on the large side, and I am not on the large side at all. We'll be checking thrift stores every Friday, which is fun. Meanwhile I have to think about how I'm going to make my hair black, but only for a week because I can't go back to school with black hair.
While we were at one of the thrift stores I found the critically acclaimed graphic novel Blankets. It's a recent book, but apparently it's really awesome. I got it for $5, and it looks like it's never been touched. This book's retail price is $30. I'm happy I got it but at the same time, I'm kinda sad. It's a shame this book was in a home with someone who didn't love it, who just got rid of it instead of reading it :< Don't worry, little book. I'll read you.
TPA's are coming. Don't think about it because there's nothing you can do until Friday.
