39) Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) - Cassandra Clare (finished around July 24)

I will admit: bored now.

Perhaps it is fresh for the teens that are the intended audience, but I've read this story before, more than once - done decently well, and done terribly.

In this, the second installment, Tessa works hard to try to stop herself from being so drawn towards the highly unsuitable and downright emotionally abusive Edwar... oh, sorry - Will. Along the way, she discovers that she also has a previously unrealized attraction towards her friend, the steady, gentle, caring Jaco... oh, right - Jem.

The emotional plot was predictable, including the "twist" that is meant to redeem all the horrible actions that Will has taken. (sigh) I truly am getting incredibly tired of books aimed at teenaged girls that use the very tired trope of "misunderstood beautiful boy isn't abusive because he's bad, but because he's really noble". It does a huge disservice to young women who are just beginning to figure out relationships, and to young men who truly are decent human beings (because those types always get relegated to second fiddle in these books).

Needless to say, I won't be bothering with future installments. The most redeeming thing I can say about this book is that the technical aspects of writing are better executed than "Twilight". The rest however...? Pass, thanks.
