With apologies to the Squirrel Nut Zippers. I have just discovered Fountains of Wayne.
Naturally I picked up Welcome Interstate Managers to obtain "Stacy's Mom," which has got to be one of my favorite songs ever. But "Stacy's Mom," while awesome, simply cannot hold a candle to at least half of the songs on this cd.
What other band can deliver a lounge-style song about a lousy waitress and follow it up with a full-blown There's a Tear In My Beer-esque country-western song? "Hey Julie" should come with the Lay's potato chip disclaimer, reworded to, "Bet you can't just listen to it once." The 70's return in "Peace and Love," cel phones explode in "Mexican Wine," and kids are abandoned by their parents in favor of an exotic vacation in "Fire Island." And I can just hear Don McLean's voice behind "Winter Valley Song."
Best cd ever. Best.
