Are you staying at the Hotel Medici? I'm not sure if I reccommended that place to you or not... Me, JC, Syd and a friend of mine stayed there in florence and it was a hotel/hostel type thing too. Hope you enjoy florence, I liked it a lot.
If Bob doesn't show you a good place for dinner (which I'm sure he will) check out the Golden View Open Bar/Restaurant. We got an amazing italian meal there for like 30 Euros (our one classy meal of the trip) and it's on the river. To get there you go over the fancy bridge to the side opposite the Duomo and take your first left, it's not far from the bridge and the view of the river is beautiful at night.
