You know what I think? I think JKR felt sorry for all us Snape fans, who always struck her as poor confused souls, and decided to do one last nice thing for us and leave his death ambiguous. :)
I suspect that Rex may be correct. I think that canon Snape is dead, as in doornail. But JKR left it ambiguous for a reason, I'm thinking. Not so much with the portraits, because it's not canon that they "automatically" appear the second the Headmaster dies. Not at all. But the fact that they didn't retrieve his body and lay it out with the others' cannot be a mistake on her part. I think she's leaving it open to us, as a gift. But in her head, I'm pretty sure he's dead.
If it's true she threw us a bone, I'm perfectly happy with it. :)
Lots of people, maybe even the majority of readers, consider what JKR says about her books to be the final word. I'd rather not. If it ain't on the page, it ain't canon. That's always been my story, and I'm sticking by it. :)
I've heard up through disc 7. I ironed ALL my cotton shirts yesterday, and started in on Jim's, which was about 3 hours worth. Now I guess I'll have to start *cleaning*. I do love audio. Jim Dale, the narrator, makes these books much more interesting to hear than they are to read. Plus it goes so slowly it gives me a chance to think about what's going on. But if you're on a time schedule it has drawbacks. It would be a lot easier if I did counted cross-stitch or something . . .
Whee! Yes, my dear. Yes. and Yes. If you haven't, read some of the snape100 drabbles so far, where several clever methods for using these ambiguities are starting to emerge. I feel better today. Still reading Snape's letter to you every once in a while to stay confident. He's such a convincing writer. *g*
Good luck wth that. *g* Might I suggest that you somehow convince him that an updated letter is his idea, not yours. You know how he likes to feel in control, even when he isn't. Oh how I love that man.
I do believe canon Snape is utterly dead, and that regan_v has the handle on why we didn't see his body laid out with the others. *kicks rock, mutters bitterly
( ... )
*facepalm* - forgot to mention that the scenario above involves the Stone, because of the idea that the dead aren't entirely comfortable being brought back. There are probably ways around it, though. Kinda tempting to do it so much later that Harry's a little older than Snape. Perhaps kill off one of the children, have him seek out the stone for them, get Snape instead. Wot-evar :).
Oh there are loads of neat ideas and possibilities out there, both "canon" (after-life fics) and "non-canon". I've got so many different ideas in my head, I'm having a hard time choosing which one to go with first. (Yes, I know I should be working on BASS, but I think I have to get a DH response out of my system before I can go back to business as usual.)
