Great example of impostor syndrome

Appropriate to one anniversary we're celebrating this week.

My old friend Wally Lamb has had a distinguished publishing career since his first novel, She's Come Undone was plucked from obscurity by Oprah Winfrey and became the first selection of Oprah's Book Club. He posted on his blog some time ago a reminiscence of being invited to one of those glitzy "mingle business, celebrities, and artistic types" gatherings where he felt desperately out of place the entire time. He was saying as much to an older man he did not at first recognize. The man turned to him (making his nametag visible) and responded something like: "I don't know why they invited me, either. I just traveled somewhere and returned home safely."

Wally had nothing more to say to Neil Armstrong.
