No, we're not burning a Wicker Man--it's simply the long-established multi-birthday party on a friend's deck with grill. Today will be one of the hotter days we've had over the many years we've met on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
I have made the vegan choice, stuffed portabello mushroom caps--giant ones! Roasting in oven now, to be finished on a clean grill rack later. Stuffing not as interesting--or as difficult to make!--as the one I prepared for the Passover seder. But it should be tasty.
I am hosting a post-graduation reception during the (fast-approaching) 50th Reunion, and I am reminded of the fable of the fox and the stork, where each hosted the other and served food in vessels impossible for the guest to use--flat plate for the stork, long, narrow glass for the fox. My menu is entirely vegan, which means that many of my guests won't find much they want to eat. This will be a small revenge for the other four days, filled with food occasions at which I will find almost nothing I can eat. But that's OK--as Reunion Chair (I keep wanting to say Con Chair), I'm already anticipating nervous tummy on such a scale that I'll be on a liquid diet for days. . .
