Went to see Public Enemy today.

I haven’t been this bored in the cinema since… actually, I can’t remember ever having been this bored in a movie. I should have walked out after the first half hour, when it became clear that the movie just wasn’t going to get any better.

Both main characters were utterly devoid of any personality traits apart from “ruthless bastards" (but not in an interesting sociopathic way), and, in the case of Dillinger, “condescending towards women” and “treats his girlfriend like a dog”.

I found it completely impossible to care about them in any way at all, which meant that any tension the movie might possibly have had was lost on me because I just did not give a shit what was going to happen to any of them. When Dillinger got shot at the end, I felt nothing but vague relief that the movie was going to be over soon.

It did not help that I’m faceblind enough that all members of the species “white guy with slicked-back hair and hat” look completely identical to me, so half the time I couldn’t figure out who was shooting at whom or if I’d ever seen the guy who just died before.

On top of that, the movie was full of interminable shots of people walking nowhere in particular in slow motion, or standing around doing nothing.

It also felt like 90 percent of the movie consisted of darkness interrupted by flashes of blinding light, but possibly it just felt that way because the shaky camera movements at the beginning had already given me a headache.

I vaguely remember hearing a lot of good things about the film, but I’m thinking I must have misremembered, because we were definitely not the only ones who hated the movie. The couple beside us walked out somewhere towards the end, and the couple in front of us kept whispering to each other and giggling.
