I keep thinking, I haven't posted in so long, I should post some sort of interesting and comprehensive summary of what happened since my last post, and then the pressure gets too much and I don't post at all. So maybe I need to stop putting this much pressure on myself to Get It Right and just Post Something, Anything instead ( Read more... )

I LOVED Moana. I expected to mostly just be there for Lin-Manuel Miranda's music because I'm not much into either Disney movies or western animation in general, but I loved the whole thing. It was really moving and funny and I liked how quirky and non-schematic it felt (which is my big issue usually with western animated movies.)

Like, the coconut pirates. They really had nothing to do with anything, but they were hilarious and I'm pretty sure they were in the movie because someone said, "You know what would be hilarious? COCONUT PIRATES." And then, unlike what usually happens ("But WHY coconut pirates? Nah, too weird and random,"), they just put them in. And the bizarreness of the underworld. The surprise climax that actually surprised me. The Rock singing! The sting ray. It was all just moving and lovely and I wanted to see it again while I was still watching it the first time.

I also liked Rogue One, but mostly for the final third. I think the characterization needed to be... there more, basically. But it was a really gutsy movie considering its franchise, that's a trope I love a lot, and the last 15 minutes or so especially were fantastic. Best Darth Vader bit in ages, and the anonymous rebels desperately passing the disc on was great.

(I haven't seen the others.)

You describe very well what I liked about Moana! The ending was completely awesome because it was so unexpected - and what a complex female character she turned out to be! I expected to like the music more, but I suspect the dubbing was what ruined that. :/

I was surprised by how much Moana moved me, too! It kind of pulled me out of a slump.

And yeah, Rogue One could definitely have done with a bit more characterization.
