I think he went over the line when he threw John in with the Aryans and locked the guards out. I mean, that was essentially torture: he was having John brutally beaten with the goal of forcing him to show himself as the Man in a Suit. He was risking John's life, too - if Elias hadn't interfered, he might have been killed before Donnelly could have gotten someone in to stop it.
I'm also deeply, deeply uncomfortable with that American thing of detaining people as unlawful combatants and denying them all their rights, although since it does exist as a tool in their legal system, I guess he wasn't entirely out of line in this instance - as far as he knows, the Man in a Suit is an incredibly dangerous assassin who's working with men like Elias. So I could understand that he'd want to pull out every tool in his arsenal to stop him getting loose again.
But yeah, I think other than that last thing, Donnelly did a really great job finding John, and unlike Snow, he did it for the right reasons. I liked him, and I thought he was a really interesting character - all the more so for going a bit off the rails at the end, when he was desperate.
I ship him with either of them *cough* or both.
I don't really ship John/Carter. I think I'm mildly squicked by their power imbalance, because John knows so many things she doesn't, and enjoys rubbing it in her face way too much. I love him, but oh man, he can be such a dick. At least with Finch and Reese, they both do that to each other. But I can totally see why others would ship them, and wouldn't be surprised if the show decides to go there at some point.
I see your point. He was pretty sure by then, but yeah. OTOH, I find the whole idea of cameras spying on a population for the greater good deeply creepy, and that was Finch's idea, plus John using violence as a solution, so yeah. I enjoy the characters and the story without agreeing with their politics/methods.
I would want a story where the power balance had been equalised. I have faith in Carter, she was so freakin awesome when she stood up to Elias threatening her son. I hope the show doesn't actually make it canon, though, I love shipping.
Yeah, Finch and Reese are also wayyyy out of line with their spying/stalking/invasion of privacy/casual violence nonsense. Although I do hold the police to a higher standard than random vigilantes, because John and Reese only represent themselves, but the police represents the government, and to me there's a difference between "There's some random vigilante running around in this city torturing people" (mildly scary) and "The police is torturing people" (FUCKING TERRIFYING).
But, yeah, I can totally enjoy the show and love the characters without agreeing with their methods. Still, I really liked that Carter yelled at him for deliberately getting John hurt, and I think "cop struggles with going too far the names of protecting people" makes for an interesting storyline, so I'm happy when they address those issues in the show.
Carter really is completely awesome, and I love that she's not some helpless damsel in distress. She was a real threat to John when she was on the other side, and she's a powerful ally now, and he'd be completely fucked if she turned on him, and he knows it. But, yeah, if I was going to read a story about them, I'd want one with the power dynamics a bit more equalized.
(I'm here cos i actually have time to check out the few lj comments I'd left sitting in my inbox for possible response if I had time)
just noticed the question about prison h/c recs. Have you read that completely awesome Merlin one where all the wizards are basically kept in a high security lockdown, and then Arthur gets chucked in there for political reasons, and Merlin protects him? If not I'll try and find it again, because, wow.
